The second we took the control over our troops from the Generals and turned it over to the politicians we started losing. That happened when the U.S. Constitution was ratified back in the 1780s, so I don't buy that explanation at all. The idea of a large standing military conducting campaigns halfway around the world has no place in a nation of free citizens.
