Bowe Bergdahl, the U.S. Army sergeant captured in Afghanistan and held for nearly five years before being traded for five top Taliban operatives, was discharged from the Coast Guard before he joined the Army, Fox News confirmed.
An Army spokesman did not confirm reports that Bergdahl's discharge was due to psychological reasons or elaborate on the circumstances leading to his ouster in 2006.
"We did confirm that Bergdahl was administratively discharged from the USCG prior to his enlistment to the U.S. Army, the spokesman said.

Gunner Anoreth crossed the Pacific on a cutter under blackout conditions when she was 18. Have you been swimming in (over?) the Marianas Trench?
My daughter chose the Coast Guard because that was the only service that would guarantee she would see action, instead of ending up behind a desk in the Midwest. She went places in the first two years that my father never saw in 32 years in the Navy.
She’s even been trained as a rescue swimmer, although, being 5’1” and 110 lbs., it would be best if they asked her to rescue a dog.
Not daily in the military?
It is one of our armed services.
Same rules, pay scale, etc.
Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, AND Coast Guard.
I thank your daughter for her service.
The ignorance of our wonderful USCG on this thread is sad.
The put-downs of the Coast Guard on this thread are appalling.
Oh, every service gets jokes made about them. I don’t know whether Tonkin Gulf, FR’s Coast Guard elder, would have laughed or been furious.
Anoreth is a firearms instructor at Cape May, counting the days until she can get back to sea.
Didn't that result in about 3 or 4 joining the SEALs and the program being dropped in 2011?
Its possible that he got discharged during the first week or two of boot camp.
All I know is that when I get my happya$$ in a bind while fishing or surfing, I will thank God for the USCG!
If a squad of US Army types show up, I will tread water!
The Coast Guard lost a man in combat in the Civil war, 574 in WWII, 7 during the Vietnam War, and one since then.
Getting into basic training isn’t the same as being in the actual CG. I suspect he was probably discharged out of recruit training and never graduated.
Anoreth, thank you for your service.
uncharacterized discharge after 26 days of basic training “
Less then two weeks he was outed.
Obvious from his writings here and other places reported...the guy was a touchy feely type of guy. Bad choice for military service...they are generally emotionally unstable.
However IMO that does ‘not’ exclude him from making his own decision to go in the military after this...he knew he wasn’t one to fit the mold...yet he signed up again just the same. I am thinking he just wanted a free ride...someone telling him what to do because he didn’t want responsibility for himself.
When they reported he cried when rescued and they told him they had been looking for him for a long time...He may have cried because he knew what would come for deserting his post.
I just think he’s wacked now for sure...he’ll be on disability for the rest of his life no doubt...as I think the military will say his five years there screwed him up.
They’ll even rescue you out of Great Lakes ice in June, probably with considerable sarcasm.
This situation is playing out all too slowly for my money.
I sense that Bowe’s going to disappear before long.
So if more died, you would what???
Respect them more?
Consider them the “REAL” military?
You make me sick.
You made a lot out of learning about Coast Guard war losses.
That was quite an irrational emotional outburst, it was a strange reaction to seeing a mention of Coast Guard war dead.
If you meant your above statement in another way then I apologize.
No I didn’t make anything out of losses. I made a lot out of the CG as a service.
And my strange reaction as you call it, was to your insinuation that since our losses weren’t huge, it didn’t count.
For a branch of the military, they don’t lose many people in combat.
If that hurts your sales pitch, too bad.
I will always stand up for and defend what I believe in.
The Coast Guard is an old and honorable branch of our armed forces.
I will always stand by that statement.
