Bowe Bergdahl, the U.S. Army sergeant captured in Afghanistan and held for nearly five years before being traded for five top Taliban operatives, was discharged from the Coast Guard before he joined the Army, Fox News confirmed.
An Army spokesman did not confirm reports that Bergdahl's discharge was due to psychological reasons or elaborate on the circumstances leading to his ouster in 2006.
"We did confirm that Bergdahl was administratively discharged from the USCG prior to his enlistment to the U.S. Army, the spokesman said.

Take back my apology.
Sales pitch?
You should be quiet and show some respect.
I never said they aren't, and I even described their Civil War combat losses.
Seriously,. why does its chain of command run up through DHS (unless in war).
Why is it placed under the Navy during wartime and not a stand-alone independent service?
How does that work?
Can you please explain.
WTH? Why did the Army take him? How come this is just now coming out?
It’s just coming out now because what we’ve learned so far is only the tip of the iceberg, in my estimation. I’ll bet there is more stuff out there that will REALLY boil your blood.

People are saying the military is strict, or the military is permissive, but actually this is all very much a moving target, depending on the needs of the military and also the available financing.
He joined in about 2005 or so, and it was much, much, muuuuch more permissive then than it is now.
They needed people like crazy, and there were all manner of waivers being given out for tattoos, “moral waivers”, psyche waivers and many others, like being too fat.
If they turn up suddenly with less money and can’t any longer afford all the troops all they have to do is announce they’re no longer taking people “with full sleeves” (tattoos”, or people with ANY tats visible with the standard uniform, etc.
The other big one they adjusted was FATTY stuff —iron-clad limits on how heavy you could be for a certain height, etc.
This psycho probably got in when they were having all the IED’s and people were scared to join, and they still had plenty of cash.
He refuses to be called Sargent. I don’t believe it’s because he doesn’t believe he earned it. I believe it’s because he “resigned” and doesn’t consider himself to still be in the army. And that’s why he’s being kept in Germany.
Hagel was all upset at the insinuation that he was being held there for political reasons. I wish Wilson would have asked him “How long was McCain kept in Manila after he was released from the Hanoi Hilton? And everyone knows he was screwed up in the head.”
Hagel said it’s shameful the way the Bergdahl family is being treated. Oh, how I despise that man!
It’s in the news that the Bergdahls listened in on top secret phone calls.
The Coast Guard provides safety to America’s maritime interests. Protecting these interests is of course important. After 9/11 President Bush signed our CG to be under homeland defense because protecting our Nation (which includes our ports) became obviously vital to our safety.
The legal basis for the Coast Guard is Title 14 of the U.S. code: The Coast Guard as established in 1915 shall be a military service and a branch of the armed forces of the United States at all times.
Under declaration of war and under the authority of the president, it operates under authority of the department of the navy.
The guard is very small.....about 40,000 uniformed members at this time. I believe the last time the CG was under the navy was WW2. I have no short answer for why. Size of the guard and it it’s many peacetime missions and it’s members training have something to do with it.
I know I gave more of a history lesson than a direct answer, but understanding what the CG is will help.
Plus....the Coast Guard has only operated under the Navy twice. WW1 and WW2. Their engagements include Vietnam, Korea, Iraq War, to name a few recent wars. But they did not operate under the Navy during those.
Under the discretion of the president and/or congress.
Barry’s calls or Bowe’s....?
Bergdahl ping.
Medical Evaluation Board and administrative seperation for mental incompetence. Bergdahl’s golden ticket to a punishment free honorable discharge.
Probable.
Or, heroin addiction.
I can totally see his captors feeding him that stuff. Then taking it away when he was unruly.
He escaped twice, IIRC, but was recaptured.
I wonder if the addiction led him back to his boys...
That’s an interesting take. Hadn’t considered the heroin angle.
Us talking to the Taliban.
yes, thank you.
