A Tea Party candidate soundly defeated House Majority Leader Eric Cantor, R-Va., on Tuesday, sending shockwaves through the Republican establishment and the Democratic Party.
And Dave Brat, the 52-year-old chairman of the Randolph-Macon College Department of Economics and Business in Ashland, Va., staged the huge upset without any help from major Tea Party organizations.
But this troublesome fact hasn't stopped certain so-called Tea Party groups from capitalizing on Brat's victory, declaring enthusiastically that Cantors defeat equals a Tea Party insurgency.
FreedomWorks president Matt Kibbe wrote: Congratulations to Dave Brat on his huge upset. The statement from the grassroots could not be any clearer. It doesn't matter what office you hold or how powerful you are. If you lose touch with activists on the ground, then your seat is in danger.
The grassroots are taking their seat back at the table and returning accountability to Washington. Votes on Capitol Hill will be heard back in the district, he added. We are proud to stand with Dave Brat in his election and look forward to working with him to reform Washington, D.C.
FreedomWorks has so far backed two losing primary candidates in 2014 and switched its endorsement in the Nebraska primary to Ben Sasse two weeks before the primary election. FreedomWorks later took credit for Sasse's victory.
Neither Club for Growth nor Heritage Action, two groups that "aim to pick off Republicans who stray from strict party orthodoxy," as the Wall Street Journal puts it, got involved with Brat's campaign.

“We remember their inaction.”
I wonder how many even on FR donated money to the Brat campaign — I didn’t. I assumed (like everyone including apparently Brat himself) that he had no shot against a sitting House majority leader. I wished him well, hoped he could at least break 40% to help send a message, but never imagined he could actually topple Cantor.
Given all that, can you really blame other outside groups for not putting money into that race?
The only TEA party happened in Boston harbor 200 years ago. I am beyond sick of the “TEA Party Leaders”. Drop it. We are conservatives, constitutionalist, and patriots. We need no leaders. We need to stand together and through the bums out.
Jmho
Thank you!
If you came to the US illegally, and the law is changed to allow you to stay, that is amnesty. It is forgiveness of the illegal act of coming to the US. You can pardon the offense of illegal entry, but that doesn't mean you get to stay. It just means you stay out of jail before getting kicked out.
Someone let Britt know.
Guess I’m just stoopid.
The article states: “And Dave Brat... staged the huge upset without any help from major Tea Party organizations.”
The article also states: “A Tea Party candidate soundly defeated House Majority Leader Eric Cantor, R-Va...”
Well, which is it?
Brat's so Tea Party he doesn't even have cronies in the Tea Party!
It's a shame these people are such Johnny-come-latelies for this guy.
"Yeah, yeah, me too, isn't it great "our" candidate won???"
Meanwhile, the Dems will be making this the theme song for this race.
PING!
Only send $ to your candidate! That’s the only way to be sure they’re actually getting the money.
We don’t need 3rd parties to siphon off their cut before they help our candidates.
RE: The article also states: A Tea Party candidate soundly defeated House Majority Leader Eric Cantor, R-Va...
BOTH. The Tea Part is not a “party” as in Republican or Democrat.
It consists of many autonomous groups all over the United States.
Hence, the title of this thread: ‘Tea Party Groups’
So, many Tea Party groups supported Dave Brat. But many others did nothing.
Make that Mississippi. Can’t believed I misspelled it. To excited I guess.
I agree with you 100%. I NEVER give to national campaigns, no matter the goal. There’s always a way to keep the money local. For example, don’t give to United Way. Don’t let them take their slice of your pie. Instead, give to local charities.
Same with politicians. I give directly to the politicians that most agree with my political philosophies.
TPP is a sham. Their emails crying and begging for money are pathetic.
This was the best news I’ve heard in a long, long time. I pity him and his family going forward; hope he has already battened the hatches against the Dimotrash smear machine coming his way.
Jenny Beth Martin would not even take Brats call.
Plus Tea Party Patriots give very little to candidates.
I quit giving to tea party groups, as well. I give directly to the candidate. I got very tired of the phone calls and pressure to give. I told them That I noticed that some of the so-called “tea party” candidates were not very conservative and I wanted to make sure that I supported the real conservative in the race, not a phony. Anyway, I received an email telling me I should vote for Perdue in GA primary. I could NOT believe that this person would encourage support for Perdue, but I guess it was b/c they had name recognition to go up against Michelle Nunn. Anyway, that showed me that anybody can be conned and I’d best find things out for myself and support those I felt I could support. So, I do not give to the tea party groups or RNC. I give directly to the candidate.

Yes, Dave Brat will be called a racist, sexist, xenophobic homophobe, and that will just be from the GOP-e traitors supporting the Democrats, who will say his mother is ugly and dresses him funny, if that’s what it takes to win.
He’d better pray he has never had any binders of women, or sipped from a water bottle on tv, due to their penetrating insight and investigatory skillz.
