Posted on 06/10/2014 4:38:36 AM PDT by sunmars

Stunning developments right now.

Iraqi prime minister al-Maliki has just called for urgent help from the UN, the EU and the Arab League.

As of right now Mosul has been taken by Isis - AQ, 28 turkish truck drivers kidnapped, Mosul Airport over-run and Isis has taken aircraft.

Well done AQ now has a fleet of military helicopters.

Militant gunmen free up to 1000 in Mosul prison break

Military has abandoned all posts in Mosul.

So does Obama still think this is going well?

After 9-11, if there had been only two choices; 1. Invade Iraq and Afghnistan or 2. Do absolutely nothing; the country and all those poor killed and maimed soldiers would have been better off if he had done absolutely nothing.

I despise Obama but this is on Bush.

Yep. All I can say is al-Maliki better have the private jet warming up on the runway and that cargo hold filled with loot!

You’re right....it sounds like the end of the road for the Iraqi central government.

Thanks for the link. There’s barely anything registering on my Twitter feed right now about this, so it’s nice to see the updates.

If the Govt is requesting assistance and then asking citizens to arm themselves, you know your are screwed.

The Kurds want Mosul; so do the Turks. So if Iraq breaks up in civil war, I imagine there will also be a conflict between the Kurds, who will want independence, and Turkey (the eastern part of which is filled with Kurds).

Just don’t ask the USA to sort it all out...

Iraq’s Parliament Speaker Usama al-Nujaifi has called on the US to intervene in Iraq, adding that he has also discussed the crisis with the automous Kurdish Regional Government president Masoud Barzani, who said he was willing to offer troops to fight off the rebels.

......i don’t think so.

No one has ever said the Ottoman Empire was perfect

Nothing is perfect.

There are, as they say, horses for courses. Johnny Turk had a very good understanding of the psychology and the bravado/cowardice formula of his Arab subjects.

Instead of a multi-trillion dollar waste in Mesopotamia with 40 000 invaluable young men dead or maimed, the Sultan would have taken a few heads, with a few more sets of testicles plus several thousand attractive women and had no worries for 75-100 years. Rinse and repeat.

You might like to read my FR post from September 13, 2001.

There were three choices, not two.

At some point during a major fire a Chief decides that all you can do is let it burn. I say let it burn.

All that was needed was to keep Saddam.

He knew how to govern a Muslim state and he kept the fear of Allah in the Ayatollah.

Correct.

If we had nuked Tora Bora in December 2001, as we should have, we and Saddam would have been besties the very next day.
