I guess his juvenile, poor-sport and belligerent comments were understandable. After all, he really wanted his horse to win "for America" (nevermind the take-home purse and subsequent stud fees).
That is a really cynical comment.
This was a great underdog story - something traditionally loved by Americans. And, they’ll still get great stud fees and have made a ton of money despite not winning the Belmont. It would have been a great story to win all three - who can’t understand that???
win for America?
oh puh-leeze
High stakes easily fertilize sour grapes. I totally understand the reaction of anyone placed into that position, whether repentant or not.
Nobody cares
How is it a ‘triple’ crown if a horse runs in only one of the races?
Your comment is idiotic.
A lot of name calling, I am reminded of Alinsky by your post.
The racing ‘elite’ just couldn’t stand that some lowly Americans using logic and scientific method could breed such a fine horse.
I heard the commentators mocking the owners, a la Alinsky, in the run up to the Preakness. Apparently you’re with them.
Sure, all that. But it’s entirely understandable, and even true, from some point of view. I think the objective take is that the Triple Crown has become impossible because of the mile and a half distance of the Belmont and the specialization that no longer allows a horse to be dominant across the board, as it were. Say no more, say no more.
Live by the media ... die by the media.
Great horse. It’s owner didn’t know when to shut up.
I wanted CC to win too! But not enough to change the rules.
Man O’ War’s owner did not enter one of the very greatest race horses of all time in the Kentucky Derby, as he didn’t want to have to bring the horse to KY and thought the horse was too young for that race.
Should he have been prevented from entering the Preakness and the Belmont Stakes, which he won easily?
I think the stud fees will still probably be excellent since the horse won both the Derby and the Preakness.
And the beat goes on——another day, another apology.
.
I thought he just wanted to whine for America.
Maryland “Freak State” PING!
Bottom line, the horse needs to win all three for the TC.
Only great horses can do it, just like you only get a handful of great human athletes every generation, same true for horses.
How many athletes dominate a sport? Nicklaus and Tiger Woods in the past 40 years in Golf. In Tennis we had McEnroe, Sampras, and 2-3 others in the past 40 years.
Same with horses, 3 in the 70’s was probably an anomaly and we probably average 1 every 20 years or 2 every 30 or 40.
