Everyone wants to paint the political “spectrum” as a line, when it’s really a circle with the loony left and right connecting diametrically opposite the “middle” where the people who are completely stupid reside.

Not in the United States, but Norway had that murderer who deliberately set up a killing field in a resort island for the children of progressive leaders. His logic was that these were going to be the next generation of leaders who would continue to champion islamic migration into their country.
So I'd classify that guy as 'right wing' - although clearly demented by his atheism.
If you are looking for a common thread: besides 'bat-shit crazy; or psychotropic drug user; or lefty socialist -- the clear trait they all share in common is that they are atheists (of whom I'll also throw in many of the islamic mass-murderers who, although aren't atheists, worship Satan).
