I had a ‘90 Mits Eclipse turbo AWD that got 32-35 mpg and was not a cracker box “smart” car by any means.
It can be done if they want to.

26 mpg from my Porsche 911 Carerra (on premium gasoline.)
It was a lovely car and fun to drive. Someone else wanted it more than I, so it was sold last month.
