Cop refuses to work at gay pride parade in Utah

A Salt Lake City police officer has been placed on leave after refusing an assignment to work at a gay pride parade.

The officer was among about 30 officers assigned to provide traffic control and security for the annual Utah Pride Parade on Sunday in Salt Lake City, said department spokeswoman Lara Jones.

"We don't tolerate bias and bigotry in the department, and assignments are assignments ... To allow personal opinion to enter into whether an officer will take a post is not something that can be tolerated in a police department," Jones told KSL.

She declined comment on the officer's reason for refusing the assignment.

Sick homofascism in Utah. If it can happen there, it can happen anywhere

“Do they have black officers work the KKK Pride rallies as well?”

Yes. There is a famous photograph (having trouble posting it from my phone) from a Klan rally, showing a small child in Klan robes playing with a black officer who was assigned to the rally. It’s not uncommon for cops to be assigned to controversial events without regard to the cop’s position on the issue.

As someone said above, an assignment is an assignment is an assignment.

Whether it be homo “rights” (snort) or KKK, he should get out there, do his easy shift, protect the 1st Amendment, and watch the fascists further make assess of themselves. Sheesh.

If he’s willing to quit, then that’s how cultural mores are set

No, an officer must first protect his dignity, his faith and family first. You cannot force a man to protect people that want to destroy him.

If this was an official assignment, the officer should either be demoted and lose $ or fired. An officer’s duty is to uphold and enforce the law for EVERYONE, not for who they agree with.

When I was on a force, EVERY such event was voluntary extra-duty. No one had to participate.

This isn’t a law enforcement event, but largely for PR. In fact, assigned police will likely NOT be permitted to enforce the law when numerous public decency ordinances WILL be openly violated during this event. Those office which do act on them will be summarily fired for offending the Gaystapo.

"An assignment is an assignment."

On one hand, and I don't know from the information presented if this a religious expression issue, I presume that police establishments swear to protect and defend the Constitution, including protecting the rights of their own members. So the police establishment in question may need some "sensitivity training," imo, concerning respecting the constitutional rights of its members if such is the case.

On the other hand, police establishments have a right to know, imo, if its limited members are ready, willing and able for all scenarios. So maybe such personal convictions are grounds not to expense police training for police training for unwilling candidates.

Finally, I regard uniformed police presence at community events as meaning that police are strictly being peacekeepers and are not there to endorse a "product," the gay agenda in this example.

Correctional officers (who are sworn peace officers)face people who ‘want to destroy’ them every shift. No one is forcing them to do the job. If they can’t handle it, they need to find another line of work. Also, an officer’s job is not to protect but to uphold and enforce the law. Period. They are under no legal obligation to protect anyone other than themselves and those in their custody. Any ‘protection’ of the public is a ‘benefit’ of upholding & enforcing.

Then it’s not an official assignment? Are they being paid via public funds? Are they not ‘under color’ at this event? To not enforce some laws for ‘certain’ people would clearly be a violation of the Equal Protection Clause, no? This doesn’t add up.......

As I said, they will be required to “look the other way” when public decency laws WILL be violated, as they are at all “gay pride” celebrations and as police are always ordered to ignore them. In other words, they will be participating in an event where they are required to violate their oath.

>>No, an officer must first protect his dignity, his faith and family first.

No one was making him put on leather chaps and march in the parade.

>>You cannot force a man to protect people that want to destroy him.

Cops do that in the ‘hood every day. The gang-bangers literally want to kill him. I doubt the gays want to harm him. Now if he was a firefighter, then most of the gays might have some other ideas.

>>If he’s willing to quit, then that’s how cultural mores are set

If he’s willing to quit for his principles, then I applaud his courage and wish that more cops did that over the growing police state in America. Is he willing to take a stand against 2am no-knock warrants, the tasering of citizens who dare to ask a question, or the overall militarization of law enforcement?
