I smoked weed from 1971 to 1984...heavy use

My IQ was tested 1975 in Spanish Fort Alabama at the request of my school just shy of 150

A score considered near genius once.

I graduated deans list last two years at Ole Miss when my live in ...rather gorgeous...southern belle girl friend used her innate skills to make me use my potential in class.....I think I made 2 Bs out of the last 30 or so courses..the rest As...one B was translating Cervantes...you haven’t lived if you haven’t had that pleasure

I scored 703 old score on LSAT and could have attended all but the top dozen law schools had I wished

I don’t advocate pot use for kids but I sure don’t share this bogeyman attitude over it many here who have never once smoked it have

But I don’t consider myself the Matthew McConahey pot advocate of FR...Im ambivalent....my girls smoked some and I know my boys will try it....I push restraint and for sure no chronic use....pretty much what I say here

One difference is down south most pot smokers are like the rest of us...conservative

I know probably over 100 pot smokers from young adults to nearly 80

98% are not libs

Pot can be harmful but it doesn’t make everyone life long dumb..I don’t buy that

Drug studies are like most science today...agenda driven....they always have been...think fish babies

Its a strange time for pot...I personally think serious decrim over legalization makes more sense....for many reasons

To me the biggest harm of marijuana is it can stunt ambition and drive....even sex drive...in some folks in heavy use.....didn’t do that to me other than being stoned is conducive to procrastinating the mundane.

I’m convinced of this but if they limit use to evening or free time like responsible smokers do this abates...but it can sure cause complacency

My IQ is now around 137-140
Two open heart off pump surgeries.

One serious head wound.

Empty sella syndrome

Nearing 60

Crappy arrhythmia

Stuff that wears down brain function directly or indirectly

It can be a curse....timelines and chronology events from barely significant on from about 1962....I remember EVERYTHING.

and I often jump ahead in conversations...which is irritating...ask my dear wife

I am not devoid of common sense but my book sense capacities do not translate to mechanical sense...which doesn’t come natural nor the physical sciences in general

Having a higher IQ than average is a gift but also a curse.....you tend to realize its lawyers guns and money time quicker and absorb how bad it really is in America these days culture wise...its hard to be oblivious... the ignorance is bliss thing isn’t there

But smarts is a lot more than simple IQ and its no guarantee of much but anxiety..lol

But I’ve observed and live in one of this nations richest counties where kids score high IQ and most folks are bright like Black Agnes and Pelham and Catherine...

That is not an accident

I notice the article says alcohol is a contributing factor as well. I guess we’ll be making that illegal too.

At any rate, the last study claiming this was debunked pretty quickly. Turns out the same results can be attributed to just socioeconomic status, and the authors did not normalize for that.

In fact, this latest study doesn’t seem to be a study at all, but rather a meta-study...a review of previous studies. Bet my next paycheck it is the debunked study (from New Zealand last year) that the authors of this article are referencing.

Appreciate your post, but wonder how old you were when you stated ‘heavy use’. The concern is that use during years of active brain development will alter the brain structurally, and have long-term, if not permanent effects. IMHO it's not a risk anyone should take lightly.

So very well said. The curse of conservatism - which I equate with higher IQ: "Clarity"

Never smoked dope. Not once. Nor cigs either. Saw my great aunt who smoked like a chimney and saw what her teeth and mouth and face looked like after 40 years of that. No thanks.

My experience with dope smokers was that of a bunch of losers who were either on food stamps and didn’t want to work, or the ones at my undergrad (you know the one) who were trust fund babies for whom college was a step required to get an installment in their payout plan for that. No real ‘career’ aspirations other than leaning on family for money somehow.

It was obvious to me that it made them, at least temporarily, much slower mentally. That and the fact that most of them were lib art majors. Not like they had 8am modern physics or differential equations classes to be sharp for or anything. So why not light up a doobie at midnight, right?

Decided the only thing standing between me and abject starvation (given I’m no beauty queen and don’t have a trust fund) was my brain. Decided to never ever do anything that might endanger that. It’s not as though the ‘off label pharmaceuticals’ have any sort of rigorous testing or process control in their manufacturing process or anything. No one to sue if something goes really wrong. I don’t particularly care for living in a cardboard box under an overpass.

In the STEM fields I have known exactly ONE weed smoker that smoked it on a regular basis and did ‘the job’. Most of the drug use was other stuff. X, special K, etc. That and STEM fields tend to do a lot of testing for stuff. And being stored in the fat, THC might show up at any time on one of those if you’ve lost weight.

My biggest question for the dopers was this: What are you escaping from? If life is so horrible why not change it. All you’re doing is wasting time. When you sober up, life’ll still suck only you’ll have less time to fix that.

Life is too short to spend it escaping from life. And working in the STEM field I was in you only have to test positive for something once for it to be a career ending move. Forget ever being hired to be anything other than ‘data scribe’. Management or anything interesting is out of the question with a conviction like that. Much too risky. And they tested for stuff too. I had many many pee tests in my career.

Should it be illegal? Why? Alcohol is legal too. If you hit my car and hurt one of my kids while under the influence of somethingorother, the law will be the least of your concerns...I’m the kind of person who will WANT you to get low bail for that...

“My IQ was tested 1975 in Spanish Fort Alabama at the request of my school just shy of 150”

147 for me according to my school transcripts. If I could have harnessed it I might have put it to something useful. Finding school not at all to my liking might have been a factor.

I went to high school in southern California in the late ‘60s and you can’t imagine how drugs just seemed to explode into our lives. Weed and hash were everywhere by the time I was a senior, not to mention psilocybin, acid, cocaine, speed, downers. What we were smoking was plenty strong and I used a lot of it.

I can see decriminalizing pot but I don’t like seeing it legalized. I don’t think the legalization experiment is going to end well.
