What makes Iowa even a battleground state? A lot of Union, universities voters? Seems like it should be more favorable to the Repub column.
The same can be said for several other, one-time "red" states as well. Entitlement class, unions, godlessness, the allure of "free" stuff... it all adds up after awhile.
I think farm subsidies play a large role. Gotta get that gubmint paycheck.
Western Iowa is conservative.
Eastern Iowa not so much.

Iowa City, with the University of Iowa is a leftist stronghold. Lots of influence, at least in the past. Maybe the tide will eventually turn there too?
