Fascists have always done this , both Mussolini and Hitler did the same to gain absolute non-democratic political control over the military. Imagine a leftist military without any Congressional oversight. The SS would be reborn.

"HOW DARE YOU question the patriotism of our military..." House Committee On Un-American Activities became House Un-American Activities Committee, etc.
