San Francisco Transit Workers Call in Sick Again SAN FRANCISCO June 2, 2014 (AP) By SUDHIN THANAWALA and TERRY COLLINS Associated Press Associated Press San Francisco's famed cable cars halted for a second straight day, and the rest of the city's transit system experienced delays after drivers called in sick again on Tuesday, days after overwhelmingly rejecting a new labor contract, officials said.
The San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency said it was running about half of its normal weekday service. Though that was up from a day earlier, riders were warned that they would still experience significant delays. Cable cars were not running.
"We're doing everything we can to get our operators back to work," spokesman Paul Rose told KTVU-TV. "We hope they get back soon so we can provide the service for our customers."
The agency known as Muni runs buses, light rail and street cars in addition to the cable cars, and serves about 700,000 passengers each day. Its 2,200 operators represented by Transport Workers Union Local 250-A rejected the contract by a 1,198 to 42 vote Friday, according to totals on the union's website.
The workers are not allowed to go on strike, but they can call in sick.
Transit officials said those who reported sick must confirm they were sick to get sick pay and could be subject to discipline up to being fired.
"Sick leave is available to employees when they or a family member is sick or in need of medical care," Alicia John-Baptiste, the transit agency's chief of staff, wrote in a memo to staff on Monday. "It would be dishonest to claim entitlement to sick leave when these circumstances do not pertain."
Monday's surprise slowdown led to long lines, as most trains and buses running were at capacity.

They should all be fired. But it’s San Fransicko
Frisco is a sewer and the voters there give these union goons their power so let them pay the consequences.
What are their demands? Free sex change operations?
Negotiation with unions is like negotiating with terrorists.
The more you give them the more they have you over a barrel.
Shut it down. Let them all proceed to defecate upon themselves.
Didn’t the BART employees go on a huge, messy strike a little over a year ago and got significant contract agreements? Now they are pulling this turd out again?
Just give them what they want and raise fares to cover it.
Agreed, on all counts.
(Friscans just hate it when one calls Frisco "Frisco". Heh heh heh.)
.
Muni is San Francisco proper. BART is different as it represents the whole bay area. It is The Bay Area Rapid Transit authority.
trouble in socialist san fransodomy?
Union freeloaders.
Hard to understand. The locals love the unions or there wouldn’t be
so many liberals running the place. Give them whatever they want
and give it to them whenever they want it. Everyone will be happy.
Damn city official tightwads need to quit acting like conservatives.
Give the masses what they voted for.
Public employee unions are destroying the country. I lived in the Bay Area when BART was being built. Believe it or not, the transit workers went on strike twice before it was even opened! I despise these people. They stick their middle finger up at the public then want our sympathy and support for their self-serving causes.
Hey, it’s San Francisco, where the LGBT peoples rule. So of course they take for granted, that people need their sex change operations.
We’re looking at you, high speed rail, and we aren’t giving up our cars...
Urban life, urban rules. And the commies want more of it.
What would happen if the whole nation went on a general strike to protest the current economy/administration?
“Public employee unions are destroying the country.”
NJ is the ideal picture of how they destroy an economy; their workfare programs here in NJ have spent the next century’s revenues already just in last century’s retirees’ benefits. Anyone considering moving here is simply buying into a MASSIVE IOU, and the current services continue to deteriorate because governments are burdened by the costs of retirees that used to perform those same services. On top of that, current salaries are outrageous; government workers have become NJ’s upper middle class since the real jobs left, and those working the crappy jobs are expected to pay their new government overlords.
Very little optimism in NJ...
This is a good reason why we shouldn’t design cities to force people to rely entirely on public transit.
The target rich environment for terrorists is another.
