People dont take hurricanes as seriously if they have a feminine name and the consequences are deadly, finds a new groundbreaking study.
Female-named storms have historically killed more because people neither consider them as risky nor take the same precautions, the study published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences concludes.
Researchers at the University of Illinois and Arizona State University examined six decades of hurricane death rates according to gender, spanning 1950 and 2012. Of the 47 most damaging hurricanes, the female-named hurricanes produced an average of 45 deaths compared to 23 deaths in male-named storms, or almost double the number of fatalities. (The study excluded Katrina and Audrey, outlier storms that would skew the model).
The difference in death rates between genders was even more pronounced when comparing strongly masculine names versus strongly feminine ones.

In Asia, they would be cyclones named "Gonzirra".
Sounds wrong to me, I would ignore Hurricane Joe but straight out of town at first mention of Tropical Storm Hillary.
RACISM!/s
I tell ya, life ain’t easy for a hurricane named Sue.
Maybe we should skip names and just call them Exterminator and Devastator or sumthin’,, how ‘bout Obamanitor or Hillacious?
Let me guess... any injuries or deaths from Hurricane Treyvon will have Jerkson/Not-so-Sharpton on the scene within minutes to assess blame...
Didn’t SheeJack demand that hurricanes be named with names from da hood? Her people were outraged!!
Prior to 1978, ALL HURRICANES had female names. Moreover, due to advances in technology (satellites, etc.), hurricanes have become far less deadly over the past several decades because people have more warning.
With the exception of Katrina, the 20 deadliest hurricanes in US history ALL OCCURRED prior to 1978 and therefore were either identified by the date and location of damage (i.e. the Great Galveston Hurricane) or they had female names. Katrina only makes the list of deadliest hurricanes because GOVERNMENT OFFICIALS were too stupid to heed the warnings.
Dare I say...war on women hurricanes.
They must be using the U.N. scientific method.
People who ignore hurricanes because of the name deserve what they get. The Darwin Award needs more nominees.
Hurricanes did have all female names at one time but the feminist’s complained. Also hurricanes weren’t as severe so there must be something to it.
Do those storms blow differently?
I think they should start using movie villains...
Terminator I
Hannibal Lector
Godzilla
Terminator II
Alien I
Mothra
Terminator III
Predator
King Kong
Terminator IV
Cujo
Jaws
Terminator V
Darth Vader
And the most recent “complaint” was that the names were all too “anglo” and not enough “African American” names were used.
But, of course, the first time they DID name a storm “Lakisha” and it destroyed a huge swatch of coastline, they’d be yelling “racism” all over again.
I would not believed it if I had not read it. LOL
Good. Now all we have to do is name all hurricanes after men and the deaths will go down sharply.
But be sure to use Waspy names, like William and James.
While we’re at it, let’s name high crime areas after men, so that’ll gin up some respect among the people who live in them.
