While some Republicans are so fed up with Washington, D.C., they simply will vote for change, many Republicans in the Delta will stick with the man who has done what senators — and particularly Southern senators — have always done: support programs and federal spending that help constituents.
Some even told me that if Cochran loses, they would vote in the fall for Childers, whose view of the role of government seems closer to Cochran’s than does the libertarian McDaniel’s. You see, in the Delta, all politics remains local.

I saw what the state and national GOP(e) did to Bret Schundler when he beat their favorite in the NJ governor’s primary in ‘01. The sitting pubbie governor endorsed the DIM. Who was McGreevey. Great judgement there, right? Left his wife and kid for another man. But hey, most of the corrupt RINO/GOP kept their hands mostly in the till. Bret might have taken them all out.
What they did to Cucinelli in Virginia was the ultimate betrayal. Had they even done a fraction of what they typically do for their candidates, he would have won and Terry McSlimeball would be another footnote.
Whatever happens, McDaniel has won by frightening the establishment.

i think Miss. has a “sore loser” law, so he could not appear on the ballot. but nothing prevents a write-in campaign (Hell, it worked for murkowski)
I hope he along with Bevin and probably a few others are the last of his breed. That would be potential nominees who stand a good chance of being solid constitutional conservatives. For whatever reason, they make horrible mis-steps in the campaign. Cucinelli's fans blame the lack of funds. It isn't that. The funds get them the spotlight. After that, they have to be better, MUCH BETTER than the insider-favored opponents.
From the outside, it looks like McDaniels might have done that. After that bogus picture-taking scandal being blamed on him, McDaniels seems to have gotten a voice that conveys strength and determination. I wish him well.

Mississipi is the poorest state in the USA. When you are at that stage, pork and seniority ARE VERY VERY IMPORTANT.
Although Ohio is not poor, one part of Ohio is as poor as Mississipi and pork is the only way people live. Oh and there are no immigrants, it is 98 percent white.
Translation; Shoveling millions of tax-payers dollars into the pockets of special interests in order to buy votes and get kickbacks.
The 17th Amendment to the Constitution changing the election of United States Senators to a popular vote system was driven, in part, by perceived widespread corruption in that body. Senators, it was said, were bought and paid for by the railroad barons who were the deep pocket heavy hitters of their day.
It didn’t fix the problem as we can see in the case of Thad Cochran. He is the Delta Queen when it comes to corruption. He has managed to fool the folks back home with petty little pork deals that make them feel like he is looking out for them while making the real deals with the K Street deep pockets in DC. He is not alone, the Senate is full of these type with the likes of Harry Reid at the top of the pile. With a reelection rate of over 90%, these guys believe that they are untouchable.
If the people of Mississippi select Cochran today, they will have made a choice for corrupt government, something that will benefit them only marginally. Cochran will then give way at some point to Haley Barbour and the cycle will continue. You get the government that you want.
