With regard to the potential to abuse American’s 2A rights, mental health screening using political definitions of mental health is dangerous, particularly when the ones doing the screening are leftist government types.
However, the flip side is that under the right circumstances a mass screening of the population could benefit us in other ways. Ask the simple question, “Did you vote for Obama?” and the affirmative gets you put into therapy, and until successfully complete, puts the patient on a no-vote list.
the mental health professions, private and public, are not doing their job.
1. they seem to believe everyone but them are mental cases.
2. they are defining serious cases as OK to be on the streets when they should be institutionalized.

In the Soviet Union and other such countries dissidents were considered to have mental problems and were often institutionalized. Only an crazy person could possibly be opposed to the paradise on earth that the communists had created. Left is left. The same kind of thinking can be seen among our “progressives”. Anybody who opposes the agenda will be deemed unfit to own a gun.

I’ve read that 1/4 to 1/5 of all adults are taking or have taken medication for some disorder, be it ADD as a teen or anti-depressants today.
That means a large portion of the adult population could lose its second amendment rights because of a psychiatric condition past or present that required medication.
You’d have to be crazy to see a mental health professional these days.
Only pratcial protection against an armed nut, is to have a gun yourself.
