Democratic nominee Tom Wolf has gotten quite the post-primary bounce.
In the first poll released after the former Department of Revenue Secretary won the Democratic primary, Tom Wolf holds a twenty point lead over the Governor.
According to Rasmussen Reports, 51% of likely voters would support Wolf while 31% would vote for Governor Tom Corbett. Only 14% of respondents were undecided.
As expected, Wolf is supported by 83% of Democrats yet only 59% of Republicans favor Corbett. Wolf pulls away 25% of PA Republicans and holds a ten point lead among independents.
Meanwhile, among those surveyed Governor Corbett’s job approval is 36% with 59% of voters disapproving of his performance.
On the issues, Wolf leads across the board. On the question as to whom the voters trust more on handling social issues the Democrat has a 51-27 advantage. 46% trust Wolf more when it comes to his handling of government and corruption while 26% trust Corbett.
The Democrat even holds the lead on questions like taxes and government spending. Voters trust Wolf by a 47-30 margin on the former and by a 46-30 margin on the latter.
Suffice it to say this is not good news for the incumbent. Additionally, Rasmussen is generally considered a Republican-leaning, though thoroughly credible, polling organization.
The silver linings for Gov. Corbett are that Wolf is just coming off an impressive win in the Democratic primary which usually juices a candidate’s numbers. There is also the high probability that PA Republicans will come back home and get behind Corbett eventually. Finally, this is just the beginning of the general election race, so the Governor has all of summer and the fall to close the gap.
The survey of 750 Likely Voters in Pennsylvania was conducted on May 27-28, 2014 by Rasmussen Reports. The margin of sampling error is +/- 4 percentage points with a 95% level of confidence.

Why are so many Republicans so down on Corbett?
Corbett...talked a fair game ...all to hide his RINO! Just another typical PA pubbie. Not worth spit. That goes for Toomey and even Santorum.

I haven’t been on many PA roads that were in good enough shape to drive 70. The most obvious 2 that aren’t smooth enough are I-80 and the ever-craptacular PA turnpike.
Among other things Corbett caved on voter ID and gay “marriage.”
Didn’t have time to search for links. Oh he says he wants to privatize the state stores and talks about tosding a few,other bones to conservatives but that’s not enough for me.
People drive at 70 and faster on there notwithstanding, especially I-80. I-81 is its own ball of wax.
If elected, Wolf will kill the fracking industry with his left-wing populist garbage about hitting them with taxes to make them “pay their fair share” (of a welfare state). But with them gone, who will pay anything?
Corbett also tried to chop funding for “education.” The teachers unions, SEIU and the other unions, which have a stranglehold on this state, made a fuss. Some of the cuts were restored, but the libs have now painted Corbett as hostile toward educating children. Never mind that much of the money for “education” actually goes towards such things as teachers’ salaries and fancy football fields.
I’m not a fan of Corbett, but on this issue, he was right. It’s a shame that we don’t have tough Republican candidates for governor — someone who will face down these powerful unions and special interests which actually run this state. Every Republican governor this state has ever had turned into a tax and spend liberal once he assumed the office.
Of course, the usual pro-aborts and assorted whackos are against him. But there are two big issues that are causing powerful unions to work against him. The first is the education union - he's made the Philadelphia school district tighten its belt and not raised funding for the state college system. The education issue of course gets all the Oprah/Dr. Oz moms to vote against him too, even though both Philly and the colleges are giant black holes for funding. The other strong union interest is the government employee union. Corbett wants to privatize the state liquor stores and make beer and wine available in grocery stores. Currently, those state store jobs are cushy, well paid union jobs. The alcohol one I believe can be spun to Corbett's advantage since I don't know anyone who doesn't wish they could buy beer and wine with their regular grocery order.
Oh, thanks ClaytonP - and I forgot the fracking. All the enviro-whackos and big government libs want their “fair share”. I don’t think the anti-fracking sentiment is as big with the regular folk though. Fracking brings a lot of jobs and everybody knows it. Probably a big issue among the African American folk who love to think of big companies paying their “fair share” but Corbett wasn’t going to get them anyway but not compelling enough to them to draw them out on election day if they weren’t already coming.
One thing not mentioned on this thread—Corbett voted to fire Paterno. Now that the prosecutor of the former PSU president Spanier has publicly stated that Paterno was not part of a coverup...many conservative PSU alumni are ticked off at Corbett..
Corbett is doing exactly the suicide dance that the national GOP favors.

Decades ago, I-79 just west of Pittsburgh was known as the “Ho Chi Minh Trail.” By truckers-some of whom had fingers broken when the wheel would jerk violently after dropping into one of the many potholes. And absolutely horrific stretch of highway. Not sure what it is like now...
I don’t really follow PA politics, but I knew Corbett was the governor. I honestly thought he was a Dem until I read this. No big loss either way in my opinion.
I am from Connecticut, doing business in PA right now.
I see the higher gas prices. Gas used to be a lot cheaper in PA than Connecticut...now gas is the same price. So I buy my gas in New Jersey, where it is 30 cents a gallon cheaper than central PA.
Haven’t seen the rise in the speed limit though.
But I have seen a LOT more police enforcement of 65 mph. Police every 5 miles on I-80, I-99, I-81, I-84
Fracking is generally accepted in PA.
If a democrat governor institutes controls, the state will crash rapidly.
This is an early poll. Let the people hear their positions on fracking and see how the numbers change.

I am glad he is toast just because of this. Although it would have been better to get rid of him during the primary. What a jerk going after Paterno. As early as 2011, I voted in Pennsylvania. I am glad that I don’t have to vote in November. It would be a possible blank line under Governor.
I see Corbett was helped A WHOLE LOT by, essentially, coming out in favor of Gay Marriage.
I sure hope some conservatives can learn from him...but I doubt that’s the case.
