Mr. Barron, 59, was placed on paid administrative leave almost two weeks ago after an assistant principal sat in on his history class while Mr. Barron was discussing the Jim Crow racial segregation laws. As part of the instruction, he showed a video of how white people back then used blackface to imitate African Americans during what they considered entertainment in the 1800s. The students did NOT object to the video - administration did.
Alan Barron was two weeks from retiring after 36 years of teaching when he was suspended.

So why is fact based teaching suddenly politically incorrect? Yes it happened... yes it's bigoted.
So why not discuss it? Shoving racism & bigotry under the rug does NOT address the problem.
But without further context for these lessons, we'll never know if it was a “good” or “bad” decision to teach it.
