At the Republican Leadership Conference in New Orleans this week, Wisconsin Senator Ron Johnson tried to distance himself from the Tea Party groups that helped elect him in 2010.
If Ron Johnson was running any faster from the Tea Party he'd leave skid marks.
Back in 2010, the Wisconsin senator was one of the Tea Partys first candidates. His upset victory over incumbent Democrat Russ Feingold in that deep purple swing state was seen as proof that a new brand of conservatism was on the march.
But Johnson, a businessman and political novice when he was first elected, told reporters at a gathering of grassroots conservatives activists in New Orleans this week that it may be time for that march to slow down.
I think the conservative movement may just be maturing a little bit. You can be very doctrinaire, you can demand purity, but in the end if you want to advance policy that you want enacted you have to win elections, Johnson said when asked about a recent spate of Tea Party losses around the country.
The Wisconsin Republican blamed national and local Tea Party groups for holding the GOP hostage. My guess is that the Tea Party groups have always been separate from the Tea Party movement.
Johnson burst onto the national scene after given a number of fiery speeches at Tea Party rallies before he was even a candidate, and told a reporter that he did kind of spring out of the Tea Party.
At the Republican Leadership Conference however, Johnson downplayed his involvement with the movement, saying, I gave a speech at a few Tea Parties. I never joined a group.

Heck, remember last election when the ABO crowd actually demanded that Jim and the mods ban us "purists" because we refused to stop warning everyone about Romney and the GOP-E?
Other than the fact that he should have kept it to himself, you mean?
Thanks for the links.
I will continue to bang my head until there is a better alternative.
My intension is to do to the Republican Party what the Communist did to the Democrat Party. It took the Commies at least 50 years so I will have to be patient.
I'm not beating myself with a whip---just pointing out some unpleasant truths, backed by FACTS, to some people with their heads still stuck in the sand.
are you a moron? Are you that ignorant about what Wisconsin is? Oh, wait .you’ve answered that. Go ahead and luxuriate in the purity of your own irrlevance.
Oh heck yea. My favorite, by far, was one of the most vocal idiots of the lot. When he couldn’t shame me into supporting his RINO, he brought out the big guns, posting pics of cartoon characters on dragons, saying that was me, screaming GFY every few posts and proclaiming how he was a real conservative. Not THAT is rock ribbed conservatisn right there ;) He still posts here occasionally. Usually on Palin threads claiming to be a big supporter.
Oh, and he hung his hat on the fact that she said, once, we should vote for the dirtbag.
Funny how she never said it again though. Can’t imagine why.
Funny how that works huh? those sticking to the GOP platform are derided as purists by the GOP themselves for following their own set of principles...which they themselves ignore...which results in people like us leaving the plantation.
AND WE ARE THE PROBLEM?!?!?
The stupid. It burns.
You called it.
Daily Beast Propaganda.
Become a Democrat and you won't have that problem. Even better you will always be right.
I don’t want to get in a p* match but have you ever been to Wisconsin?
Both my parents were born there and I spent much of my life in MN right next door.
The entire state is slowly transforming to a Red State but it is NOT there yet by any stretch.
There is a reason they call UW Madison, the Berkeley of the Midwest and Madison is the power base.
Chicago is just down the road when they need help.
Relax, take a breath and concentrate on moving your home state Red.
Colorado is much closer to going Red but it is still an uphill battle.
A vast improvement on Puss Feingold who for some reason became a sacred calf to liberalsd, but Johnson has fallen into the establishment trap as bad as Rubio did.
To these party hacks, it's all a game. They have absolutely NO CLUE what time it is or what has happened to the republic.
So they lash out at those who will not capitulate to the Establishment, and blame them for MarxoFascists establishing a dictatorship - EVEN THOUGH the evidence that the GOP is complicit in this velvet coup, is right in their faces!
Stopping this Marxist juggernaut and coup is NOT going to come from within the system or from within the corrupted party system.
Stopping them is going to have to come from OUTSIDE the system and be forced upon them, because the Ruling Class is NOT going to relinquish power.
Anyone dreaming that we can revert back to a Constitutional Republic via civil means is clueless as to the enemy that now has intrenched itself in power.
The GOP is as every bit the enemy to freedom and individual liberty as the MarxoFascists are. The GOP is content to operate as the Judenrats for the Democrat fascists.
And to them, as you have read it from their own mouths - Conservatives are the enemy that must be 'crushed wherever we find them'.
Purity? Damn straight buster. Pure and Proud. What are you going to do about it? Grovel before Obama for a scrap from his table? That's what we thought.
Name me one Republican Senator who has gotten in the face of a Democratic Chairman like Johnson did last week.
Since you're reduced to name calling in the argument, I'll take that as a win.
We need a second party, first.
Ted Cruz, with Patrick Leahy.
Read much???????
I didn’t call you a name - I asked you a question. But like every other question I’ve asked you - you can’t answer.
Yeah, us peons must yield in the presence of such greatness, I suppose.
Cred my arse.
scoff all you want, you have noooo idea ..ignorance is bliss, and you one happy ignorant dude.
