I don’t get it. Why are the Clippers so valuable?

They are by far the second team in LA. They only get some attention because the Lakers are so bad right now, but you know that won’t last for long.

Evidently Ballmer wants to amuse himself with a hobby. $2 billion is pocket change for him. Now he can amuse himself by buying some top players to fill the gaps.

Because they're the second team in LA. If they were the first team in LA then they's be worth more. If they were the only team in Milwaukee they'd be worth about $600 million.

It’s a huge market, they have a strong fan base that have stayed loyal through decades of mediocrity, and a good TV deal. Also the Lakers might not be bouncing back any time soon, the brain that kept them relevant is dead and so far there’s no proof the next generation has any idea how to run a team.
