CALGARY A controversial U.S. fast food franchise has set up shop in Calgary.
Chick-fil-A opened Tuesday at the departures level of the Calgary International Airport, outside of the Delta and WestJet ticket counter, said Cheryl Dick, senior director of operations for licensing.
It's currently the only location open in Canada, though not the first to ever come to the country.
"We were in Canada before in 1995 and learned a lot through that experience, but we weren't open very long and now we have an opportunity to work with our business partner HMSHost and open this new location," she said.
"It's a great opportunity for us to introduce the brand, the food, our service, to Calgarians.
The franchise famous for chicken sandwiches, waffle fries and being closed on Sundays came under fire after its president publicly opposed gay marriage in 2012.
When asked if the company is worried about how it will be perceived while operating in Canada, a country that supports gay marriage, Chick-fil-A spokeswoman Brenda Morrow said it will be a welcoming place.
"As a restaurant company, we are just really focused on the food service and the hospitality and so we are going to strive to make it a welcoming place for everyone that wants a great meal," Morrow said.
The airport location will be closed Sundays.
Waffle house goes as far west as Arizona and Colorado.

Yeah, because they wont open up one here in Michigan!
Why do you forsake us?!!?

Report: Chick-fil-A tops KFC again in annual sales
People are eating more Chick-fil-A chicken. A new annual report says Chick-fil-A sold more chicken in 2013 than KFC.
Nobody supports gay marriage. There is no such thing.
Those who are not repulsed by the idea of Homosexual behavior is a pervert.
That’s an amazing stat given that Chik-Fil-A has about on tenth the number of locations (1700 vs 19,000) as KFC.
It must be insanely profitable.
Going to stick to Swiss Chalet.
“Always so good for so little.”
Here in the burbs of Ft. Lauderdale, there are 3 within a few miles.
YUMMY STUFF
They are - always crazy busy at the one near us, but they’re still quick even when it’s back to the doors.
I stopped right there.
"Controversial" is a code word (think PC dog whistle) which means, "not PC, don't listen, OK to hate". Its PC usage has nothing to do with its dictionary meaning; you won't see it applied to a leftist, no matter how combative and irresponsible. But Rush Limbaugh? "Controversial" is practically his title of address in that world.
Chick-Fil-A probably has not done enough penance to expiate the guilt of having sent a couple bucks to the AFA (if that's who it was, I disremember). They might have to open on Sunday after all, and start serving tofu burgers or something.
I am from B.C. friend, and my husband’s family is from Calgary. What I learned is that Calgary IS Conservative or whatever you want to call it - I say way to the right but not Socialist. That Socialist BullS*&t really bugs me. Don’t get me wrong, there are plenty of them in this country but Calgary and Alberta for that matter - NO!! They are cowboys if you get my drift. And I live in the part of B.C. that is Conservative. (The Interior as in Kelowna) - Vancouver - bury it!! It’s a place that I lived in, went to University in, got my nursing degree in, and now, I am happy to get the heck out of after a weekend. CO
Some time back I had a mild run in with KFC that was quite different... I got my order and the receipt was wrong. I told the woman at the window that I had been given the wrong receipt. She knew it - because she said to me something to the effect that ‘it was OK’ because the amount was lower than what I owed. I asked her to ring up my order and bill me the amount I owed. I can assure you - she was NOT happy.
Perhaps because many Calgarians have asked them on their website, to come to open in Canada.
Perhaps because Calgary is one of the richest cities in Canada and conservative and fastest growing (in spite of a muhamedan mayor who appears kinda 'light in the loafers').
Perhaps because there are almost 100K Americans in this city.
Perhaps because many Christians in this city are familiar with Chick-fil-A through their sponsoring of several leadership conferences broadcast at several mega-churches in Calgary.
With all the air traffic from Calgary to other oil centres and to the States, there are bound to be many passengers who are familiar with CfA. For many others, if the food is as good as people on FR say, it will grow, in spite of what the homosex lobby may try.
I suspect CfA management fear the strong homosex lobby on the 'left' coast, be it Canada or the US, so they likely will expand service in Alberta before they try the leftist States and Province. I suspect the tax regime in AB is better than in either WA or OR, plus Calgary has 1.1 million and is projected to grow to 1.4 million in 3 years. Until and unless 0.00 completely destroys the US economy, Calgary will keep growing.
FWIW, if I had not happened on this article, I would not have known, so I thank the person who posted this.
Maybe if they expand up here, they’ll re-brand it that way, just for Canada. It might confuse the homosex lobby who might want to protest them.
Yeah, the number’s almost too good to be true...almost.
Wikipedia (yeah I know) says for 2013
KFC: $23b
CFA: $ 4b
That seems a lot more reasonable.
LOL - slight difference in the numbers. I suspect you’re right on this nascarnation. Good catch.
