Police: Driver mows down victims after argument in Baltimore

BALTIMORE —Authorities have made an arrest in connection with a hit-and-run in west Baltimore on Tuesday that killed a woman and a toddler and injured a 7-year-old girl.

Baltimore police said late Wednesday night that they arrested 28-year-old Lucresha Mints in connection with the case.

Detectives said the intentional hit-and-run happened at Franklin and Monroe streets just after 9 p.m. Tuesday following an argument between Mints and 25-year-old Latoya Skipwith.

Police said the fight got so heated that Mints got into her car, aimed it at Skipwith and floored it, driving down the sidewalk and striking Skipwith, 2-year-old Joshua Carter and an unidentified 7-year-old girl as they sat on the steps of a church.

Witnesses told 11 News the victims ended up in a nearby stairwell, where on Wednesday, the boy's father sat in shock. He was nearby when the incident happened.

"I got the word and ran around the corner, and once I came, I seen my son a mess. It just hurt me so bad, I just broke down," father Joshua Carter Sr. said. "I just snapped."

Skipwith was killed, and police confirmed Wednesday that Joshua also died as a result of his injuries. Relatives of the victims told 11 News that Skipwith and Joshua were cousins.

The 7-year-old girl was taken to Johns Hopkins Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Police said she is expected to survive.

Police told 11 News that family members said the hit-and-run was sparked by an argument and that Mints knew her victims. Police said they were able to recover the vehicle used in the hit-and-run, which was a gray Acura.

"She took two lives from one family -- two babies. That's my youngest sister and my little cousin. He was only 2 years old," said Skipwith's sister, Rhonda Bryant, through tears.

"My little grandbaby -- he was the love of my life," said Helen Virginia Whitfield, Joshua's grandmother, who was still trying to comprehend Wednesday how someone could do something like that.

Police have not yet provided details on what the argument between Skipwith and Mints was about.

Earlier in the day Wednesday, relatives were upset with police because of what they called a lack of communication from detectives about whether the suspect was in custody or not.

"Somebody’s got to give us some answers. They owe it to us," said Joshua’s great-grandmother, Elissha Jefferson.

Police said at the time that they were doing everything they could.

"In this case, we definitely empathize with the families. We're speaking about an instance in which a 2-year-old child and an adult victim were killed last night, where a vehicle was used as an intentional weapon to cause this homicide. We're reaching out to the public and we’re doing our due diligence on our part. We're really asking for the public's help," Baltimore City Police Department Sgt. Jarron Jackson said.

Homicide detectives are still investigating.

Charges against Mints haven't been announced yet, but she's no stranger to police. Court records show earlier this month, she was arrested on first- and second-degree assault charges.

Deaer PapaBear3625,

I think management takes a pretty lenient line on the issue. Discussion of actual facts, actual research, actual data, is generally going to pass muster. It is merely an observation that there are group racial differences in the measurement of IQ. It is merely reciting state and federal crime statistics to note that blacks commit violent crimes at a higher rate than non-blacks.

But these two posters weren't presenting facts or arguing therefrom. The first poster devalued the lives of two human beings based on their skin color. That's just good old fashion racism. The second poster chimed in with a term (that I'd frankly never seen before) that put black people on par with lower primates. Again, just pure racism. No attempt to construct a logical argument to make a point, just a show of racial animus.

Sometimes, things can be close to the line. These two weren't anywhere near it.

Good riddance to bad rubbish.

However, it's getting hard to know where the line is.

I am not a fan of the "Amish" meme - by now it's been done to death.

For me the line is crossed when one leaves off pointing out factual data and descends to advocate or approve of harm coming upon a specific group simply because they are a part of that group. And yes, I would include call for the obliteration of all Muslims in that. (I have to fight with myself very hard on that one.

Yesterday, we had a thread in which approval was expressed for aborting black babies. That was quickly dealt with as over the line.

I never saw the comments, but both are gone now. Doc Savage has had many replies removed lately.

Spot on. I am still boggled that two 98’ers could have expressed such vile thoughts. How did they contain that for all those years?

Pointing out the factual data about a group’s behavioral propensities is not at all a call for harm to come to that group.

It’s a futile (IMO) attempt to shame that group into changing its cultural values such that these negative behavioral propensities become less ubiquitous within that group.

I did not say it was.

Dear don-o,

“How did they contain that for all those years?”

Times are tough. If you keep your eyes open, it's clear that as bad as things were, they're getting worse. It's hard to avoid bitterness and anger.

All we can do is pray harder.

Very sad, two needless deaths and Miss Mints will now spend many years honing her criminal skills in jessup or hagerstown on the taxpayers expense.

There's a lot here that goes over "my" line but doesn't go over Jim Rob's line, and I accept that as a reality. Some of it is rough humor, some of it is hostile generalization partly (or not) rooted in statistical probability.

Generalizations arising from fact0based evidence may be hard to hear, and may be open to refutation, also based on fact. Adult people of good will and active intelligence can handle that.

But wishing some innocent fellow human being's death --- or being "OK" with their death ---- because of race, skin color, national origin, class, or religion, that is just vile animus, genuine racism/bigotry in its most morally objectionable form.

It's not just "offensive" as a matter of personal style: it's morally depraved, evidence of a corrupt mind.

“Something I’ve also noticed is one cannot have a differing viewpoint that expresses a controversial view without bringing Jim into the fray.”

So it’s okay with you what was said in posts 5 and 7?
There is such a thing as community guidelines and decorum you know.
Oh, welcome to FR.

>>>I’m with you on this one. While why we said is detestable we are no different then DU if we begin yanking comments because it is “offensive”. In fact I detest the use of the term offensive. This crap has made us a mambie pambie group of pathetic groveling infants.
I’ll take my marbles and go home now<<<

Offensive is one thing, saying it is a good that innocent people, including a 2 year old toddler were murdered is sick and twisted.

The sickos who posted that have a right to express their opinions, but this is Jim Robinson’s house and his moderators have the right to tell them to take it elsewhere.

“That is fine and good but we are then no different then any other sites that imposes free speech limitations.”

You don’t understand what private property is, do you?
You sound like those TBL morons who shrieked about “free speech” while trolling here.
This forum is privately owned, thus the owner can decide what goes on at their property.
Example, I can’t go to your house, drop a deuce on your coffee table and shriek “free speech” any time I want and STAY THERE without consequence, can I?

“very aware of site and been around for quite a long time.”

If that were true, then you’d know that your talking points in posts 54 and 60 were pure BS.

Not very difficult really and if we were truly a location of free speech as expressed as stupid as what is said then let the oppossing views stand. We can police our own off the forums. I don’t like the stifling of free speech of any sort and those self ascribed “Conservatives” need to check their cards if “offensive” speech they dictate as such is stifled. How were non chritians converted? By listening and convincing the opposing viewpoints that yours are more correct. In this situation we’ve shut that conversation down before it even began. That’s my only point, allow for the free flow of ideas I think the adults can weed it out.

FR is a CONSERVATIVE forum, we don’t need to allow racist views or liberal viewpoints voice or space.
You want a p[lace for that?
Go to TBL, DU, or stormfront.

As you dictate sure...there are some in agreement.I’m not here to convince you it obviously won’t happen. I am merely expressing the desire to take people like this to task in an open forum and allow for a back and forth. These are the type of people to convince their line of thinking is flawed. If they choose not to agree then we move on but I’d at least like to see what angers the individual so much so they harbor bad and racist feelings
