Richard Martinez grew up around guns, shooting birds out of the fruit trees on his familys farm. He later served as a military police officer in the U.S. Army before going on to become a criminal defense lawyer, at times representing the young and the violent.
Now, Martinez is a grieving father.
Hes asking members of Congress to stop calling him to offer condolences but nothing more for the death of his only child, Christopher Michaels-Martinez, who was killed in the rampage Friday in Santa Barbara, California.
I dont care about your sympathy. I dont give a s that you feel sorry for me, Richard Martinez said during an extensive interview, his face flushed as tears rolled down his face. Get to work and do something. Ill tell the president the same thing if he calls me. Getting a call from a politician doesnt impress me.
Saying we are all to blame for the death of his 20-year-old son, Martinez urged the public to join him in demanding immediate action from members of Congress and President Barack Obama to curb gun violence by passing stricter gun-control laws.

give Martinez a pass, he is out of his mind right now with grief and looking to make sense out of the senseless
it happens when you lose a kid in such a shocking and unfair way
However, our SHAMELESS liberal politicians need to STOP using grieving parents as poster children for their own anti 2d amendment agendas
Someone should eventually steer Martinez to a real cause- crusading for better mental health providers and services, accountability for their malpractice, and a law with the balls to identify psychopaths and commit them against their will for a thorough evaluation- then admit that some humans, even from childhood, do not deserve to walk free among the rest of us
I wonder how many psychos Martinez has set free on other parents, as a defense attorney?
You had gun control. What you needed was Son Control.
And if you try to take my guns from me, you’ll need a LOT of extra security....
A pass?
No.
What country can we export him to that has the gun control he desires?
I've avoided making comments earlier, because like you said - tragedies can affect people in different ways - but ... his son's body was barely cold and he was out making public political remarks. Rather than making funeral arrangements, mourning for the loss of his son, comforting his wife, and other loved ones -- he's out wrapping himself in the mantle of his son's blood and advocating government confiscation of firearms.
After mourning a few weeks, it would have made more sense for him to advocate that Government reduces the obstacles that put in front of our ability to exercise our 2nd Amendment rights and protect ourselves from the crazies and criminals. The guy comes off as someone with an agenda, and he's more than happy to use his son's death as a platform and a launching pad for his new 'career'.
Sounds to me like he is ginning up for a run for Congress.
He should forget his interest in being an anti-gun activist and instead figure out how he can help people with mental illness, which is what the kid suffered from.
Richard Martinez is NOT the father of Elliot Rodger. Martinez' son will killed at a deli, by Elliot Rodger.
Couldn’t we loose him also?
Sympathy for him as a grieving father, but absolutely no sympathy at all for him sloughing responsibility and waving his kid's bloody shirt.
Carolyn "Shoulder Thing" McCarthy (*) is retiring due to self-induced lung cancer, so they need a replacement.
(* Notwithstanding the fact that she smoked for 40 years, she blames asbestos. I swear, liberalism really is a mental illness!)
He keeps up with this public call for gun control and he will begin to lose empathy.
Not the perps dad. One of the victims dad. Who is a criminal-defense attorney. No doubt if the son he lost was not a victim, this asshat would have lined up to defend the perp if he hadn’d popped himself.
There’s a good chance his son would be alive today, if others had been armed. Now he wants to disarm all the others.
“....before going on to become a criminal DEFENSE lawyer”
All I needed to know to not bother reading nay further.
some states do have laws on knives...believe it or not.
Yep, from the first, he went straight to political message.
Remember what VT Senator Bernie Sanders said, “people die every day”.
As long as it’s just some old Veterans, no problem for good old Bernie.
What about drugs (SSRIs), Mr. Martinez?
