Sandy “High Pockets” Hart of Santee has racked up 8,000 miles on her Harley-Davidson motorcycle honoring members of the military in this region.

The Patriot Guard has grown from a handful of people who came together in 2005 to shelter families of troops killed in Iraq or Afghanistan from Westboro Baptist Church protesters, who claim that battlefield deaths are retribution for acceptance of gays and lesbians.

It has since mushroomed to an estimated 300,000 volunteers nationwide, including more than 900 in Southern California. Hart had been a regular with a Harley-Davidson riding club based in San Diego, but all that changed several years ago.
