Pope Francis delivered a powerful boost of support to the Palestinians during a Holy Land pilgrimage Sunday, repeatedly backing their statehood aspirations, praying solemnly at Israels controversial separation barrier and calling the stalemate in peace efforts unacceptable.
Palestinian officials hailed Francis decision to refer to the state of Palestine. In its official program, the Vatican referred to President Mahmoud Abbas as the president of the state of Palestine, and his Bethlehem office as the presidential palace. He pointedly called Abbas a man of peace. ...
Coming to Bethlehem and flying to Bethlehem from Jordan shows solidarity with the Palestinian people, which is wonderful. We need that, said Samar Sakkakin, a 52-year-old Palestinian American from Canton, Michigan.
In November 2012, the U.N. General Assembly overwhelmingly recognized a state of Palestine in the West Bank, Gaza and east Jerusalem lands Israel captured in the 1967 war as a non-member observer. Israel objects to the Palestinian campaign, saying it is an attempt to bypass negotiations.
I am with you, he told a group of Palestinian children at a stop in Bethlehems Deheishe refugee camp. He also held a private lunch with five Palestinian families who say they have been harmed by Israeli policies. ...
Jubilant Palestinians cheered Francis as he arrived in Bethlehems Manger Square, shouting Viva al-Baba! or Long live the pope! Giant Palestinian flags in red, white, green and black and the Vaticans yellow-and-white flags decorated the square, which is home to the Church of the Nativity, built over the grotto where many Christians believe Jesus was born. ...
When I heard a Jesuit was elected Pope, my antennae went up. As I have been reading the Pope’s daily comments over the past year, my antennae went up even more. I kept hoping that this Pope would stop with his off-the-cuff daily comments and revert to standard Papal speaking procedure. No such luck. I was hoping it was the MSM who were misconstruing his daily comments. No such luck. When I heard he was planning to fly into Bethlehem from Jordan I became even more concerned as it was obvious he meant it as a message to the Palestinians.
As a Catholic, I am concerned and disappointed over the Pope’s actions. Stopping to pray at the security wall which was build to stop terrorist bombings as if it were the Western Wall is pure propaganda for the Palestinians. Referring to Abbas as a man of peace is pure nonsense. Having to be pressed to make a stop at the Holocaust memorial is a sad commentary.
Pope Francis has been a joy to liberals and left wingers both inside and outside the Catholic Church. For the rest of us who attend weekly Mass and work to help in the New Evangelization process, he has been a severe disappointment.
I have read rumors that his health has become problematical, that long-scheduled meetings have had to be cancelled, and that he has gained a substantial amount of weight of late. Seeing the Pope on TV the past three days, he appeared to be short on energy, pallid, and in need of assistance getting up and down. His frequent smiles had become far fewer. He neither looks nor acts like a person in reasonably good health.
this story came from the AP, and they are notorious for recontextualizing.
The Pope did not say Abbas you are a man of peace,, he said you are known as a man of peace
peace is the basic philosophical tenant of Islam, it is attained by submitting to Allah. Therefore, islam is peace to Palestinians, but not in the Western context of nonviolence. So, when the Pope used the word peace, was he speaking to Palestinians or the West he was speaking to Palestinians.
you are known as a man of peace (Islam)
I don't know enough to gauge the insight, if it is one.
Other commenters opined that the pope is painting Abbas into a corner. Wishful thinking?
this pope continues to prove that he is a socialist through and through
Man of Peace - Bob Dylan
Look out your window, baby, theres a scene youd like to catch
The band is playing Dixie, a man got his hand outstretched
Could be the Führer
Could be the local priest
You know sometimes Satan comes as a man of peace
He got a sweet gift of gab, he got a harmonious tongue
He knows every song of love that ever has been sung
Good intentions can be evil
Both hands can be full of grease
You know that sometimes Satan comes as a man of peace
Well, first hes in the background, then hes in the front
Both eyes are looking like theyre on a rabbit hunt
Nobody can see through him
No, not even the Chief of Police
You know that sometimes Satan comes as a man of peace
Well, he catch you when youre hoping for a glimpse of the sun
Catch you when your troubles feel like they weigh a ton
He could be standing next to you
The person that youd notice least
I hear that sometimes Satan comes as a man of peace
Well, he can be fascinating, he can be dull
He can ride down Niagara Falls in the barrels of your skull
I can smell something cooking
I can tell theres going to be a feast
You know that sometimes Satan comes as a man of peace
Hes a great humanitarian, hes a great philanthropist
He knows just where to touch you, honey, and how you like to be kissed
Hell put both his arms around you
You can feel the tender touch of the beast
You know that sometimes Satan comes as a man of peace
Well, the howling wolf will howl tonight, the king snake will crawl
Trees thatve stood for a thousand years suddenly will fall
Wanna get married? Do it now
Tomorrow all activity will cease
You know that sometimes Satan comes as a man of peace
Somewhere Mamas weeping for her blue-eyed boy
Shes holding them little white shoes and that little broken toy
And hes following a star
The same one them three men followed from the East
I hear that sometimes Satan comes as a man of peace

Abbas “man of peace”????? Did the Pope ever take a history lesson?
Bill, I think there’s some wiggle room there. I do think there must be ways to make comments that are complimentary that wouldn’t sound bad to people in the West though.
I would agree. I didn’t get your IB4 in context?
What in the world?
“Regardless of the Vatican position on abortion and homos, I am convinced that Frank is a garden variety progressive.”
I agree. When he’s reported as making obviously leftist statements, his defenders tell us to look at the original Vatican pronouncements. However, this Pope, like most others, is a man who has risen through a very difficult bureaucratic vetting process, one that winnows all but the smartest men and those who are most able to use language for their ends. Francis has to know how “progressive” remarks he makes will be taken and represented. Hence, if he didn’t want such an understanding to develop about his remarks, he’d be making different ones and repudiating earlier media misstatements about what he has said. IOW, hd’s a clever prog. who knows exactly how his remarks will be reported and interpreted who’s left himself a place to retreat to in the text of the Vatican originals.
Why I sleep late on Sundays.
Couldn't have said it better myself.

That is all I have ever considered myself since I was around 13 years old.

Agreed.
Come quickly Lord Jesus.
“Hear another parable: There was a certain householder, which planted a vineyard, and hedged it round about, and digged a winepress in it, and built a tower, and let it out to husbandmen, and went into a far country: And when the time of the fruit drew near, he sent his servants to the husbandmen, that they might receive the fruits of it. And the husbandmen took his servants, and beat one, and killed another, and stoned another. Again, he sent other servants more than the first: and they did unto them likewise. But last of all he sent unto them his son, saying, They will reverence my son. But when the husbandmen saw the son, they said among themselves, This is the heir; come, let us kill him, and let us seize on his inheritance. And they caught him, and cast him out of the vineyard, and slew him.
When the lord therefore of the vineyard cometh, what will he do unto those husbandmen?” Matthew 21:33-40
