Before you come down on the cops, it would be a good idea to ask yourself what exactly they are supposed to do in a case like this. If you have an adult who has not committed a crime and hasn't given a clear, unambiguous threat that puts someone in imminent danger, then the police don't have the legal authority to do anything with him.

This isn't a law enforcement problem. It's one of the defining characteristics of a free nation.

EXACTLY! Unfortunately, the hypocrisy on this board often parallels the hypocrisy of the left. The predominant theme amongst us is “Get the damn government out of my life, I don’t want to live in a police state”. Then something like this happens, and everyone is crying “It’s the cops fault, they should’ve done something!”. What the hell do we really want? The last time I posted here supporting firearm license suspension upon becoming the subject of an issued order of protection (loosely, but not directly related to this case), I was attacked unmercifully here for being a communist gun confiscator. Now, everyone wants to blame the cops for NOT detaining or confiscating this guys guns upon a concerned call to police from family members. Besides cowardly monday morning quarterbacking and blaming Cops for EVERYTHING, what do we REALLY want?
