Liberals Wanted to use the VA as a Model for National Health Care

ObamaCare could have been even worse. (via James Taranto)

In 2009, the Campaign for America’s Future, a collection of influential lefties within the Democratic Party, ran a blog post that proposed to use the VA as a national health care model.

CAF events had featured Obama, Hillary Clinton and Elizabeth Warren. It was an influential organization pushing the party further to the left.

The post was by health care consultant Joe Paduda, who recently dismissed the people suffering under ObamaCare by writing, “‘When one person suffers it is a tragedy, when millions do, it is a statistic.’ As abhorrent as quoting Josef Stalin might be, the monster was right.”

If you want a window into the mindset that is responsible for the VA and ObamaCare, you could do worse than to contemplate the sort of person who thinks that way.

Arguing against the Medicare for Everyone proposal that’s a popular lefty vehicle to single payer, Paduda wrote, “Medicare is not controlling the primary driver of medical costs – utilization of services.”

“Medicare’s imaging expenses doubled between 2000 and 2007. Utilization of physician in-office services went up more than 10% in 2006.”

The VA however is super at controlling utilization of services, aka getting patients the tests they need so they don’t die.

“It’s the Veteran’s Administration, and rather than Medicare, i’d base a national plan on a dramatic expansion of the VA,” he said, claiming that while “the number of veterans receiving treatment from the VA more than doubled, from 2.5 million to 5.3 million, but the agency needed 10,000 fewer employees to deliver that care – as a result the cost per patient stayed flat.”

Much like a lot of VA patients. But as Stalin said, “The idea of a concentration camp is excellent.”

Merrill Goozner criticized Paduda’s proposal because few lefties were even willing to advocate for bringing the NHS’s single payer death machine to America.

“What Paduda failed to note was that the VA also is a single-payer-type system that delivers health care directly, just like the British National Health Service… The problem with using the VA as a model for the public plan is that those who would accuse its proponents of advocating for “government-run health care” would be right. How many of those proponents would be willing to stand up and say at that point: “Yes, that’s what we’re for.”

Give it a little time.

Graves will be dug, vets will be buried and a year from now another lefty with CAP or some other outlet will write an article about how great the VA is and another lefty will suggest that we will turn it into national health care machine.

Because that’s what lefty does.

As Stalin said, “Education is a weapon whose effects depend on who holds it in his hands and at whom it is aimed.”

The history to the VA is kinda interesting. After WW I...there was this rushed-up political game of giving a pension deal to all those who served in WW I. The average deal was $500 to $1000, depending on the number of months that you were in the war, and if you were overseas. The amazing part of the story is that it was all rigged to pay off....around 1944 (twenty years after it was passed). No one discussed how they’d pay the sum of money, and frankly, they didn’t care (it’d be a problem for later generations of Republicans and Democrats to pay).

So, when the crash of 1929 came....the vets wanted to get their money ahead of the schedule. What Congress basically came to offer early on, was this VA deal...free health care. They figured they could achieve happiness with these guys with free medical care. Naturally, when 1932 came around with the election...the pay-off stirred up vets and become another mess to deal with.

The VA of the 1930s? Mostly a failure because the clinics/hospitals were few in number and mostly around urban areas. Senators and Congressmen used it as a gimmick by promising to bring a new hospital to some rural area for the VA....like a gift situation and you needed to honor them by voting again for them. It was always (Republican and Democratic era)...a tool used to simply funnel money from one pocket to another.

We’d all be better off to just give a voucher to each qualified vet to buy GS-type health insurance, and let them buy it to fit their local situation. The eighty billion they currently spend? It’d easily pay for it, and we could downsize the VA to forty guys...all sitting out in Oklahoma (nice cheap area to base them, in my humble opinion).

It looks like that is exactly what they have done.

Complete with Stealth Death Panels, bogus paper work, made up statistics and corrupt government employees.

I’m doing okay with Medicare. I’ve also got “Plan F” for a supplemental policy, and that results in nothing out of pocket for me ... no copays, no deductibles and no nothing ... :-) ...

Don’t be so negative.
Reducing the lifespan is a great fix for Social Security and Medicare budgets!

Once the driver-less car is perfected and Skynet is up and operating the human being will just be an unneeded burden on Mother Gaia.

Progressives will be delerious with joy - for a short while.

I know some liberal vets who hate the VA. But everyone of them wants single payer. Crazy, huh.

I know a nurse who said “I would never work at the VA.” Yet she is all for single payer.

These people are lame brains. There’s no other explanation.

This is a very late addition to the remarks. Maybe better late. “Paduda” sounds like a name a kid would give his “willie”? He is also a criminal to think the way he does.
VA and Obamacare are both disasters.
