The week prior to the holiday weekend has been rife with food recalls, virus outbreaks and warnings against possible food-borne illnesses. It also precedes one of the countrys biggest barbecue weekends: Memorial Day.
Sprouts, walnuts, hummus and ground beef have all been recalled this week either due to possible contamination from E. coli or Lysteria. E. coli is an intestinal bacteria that can cause gastrointestinal illnesses in humans.
Symptoms can include abdominal pain and diarrhea. Lysteria is a type of food poisoning that most affects pregnant women and children. Symptoms include fever, muscle aches and nausea but can become more severe if the infection spreads to the nervous system.

I have some pickled onions and radish right here that I made up the other week.
I agree.
How continent. A meat scare just when people buy lots of it. Almost like it was planned by some ‘healthy eating’ nazi in DC....
Look for more of this in coming holidays.
If you toast a pita, cut it in half, thickly spread cold plain hummus in it, drizzle lemon juice and olive oil and sprinkle with paprika, you will be eating classic hummus which is delicious instead of all the new flavored hummus.
You may want to add salt/pepper but you don’t need to.
I will try that..
Just had graduation lunch for my niece and ordered the avocado, tabouli, SPROUT sandwich.
Well, the ceremony was beautiful and so was my niece.
But, I just had to eat the SPROUTS because they were so good with the avocado, which is probably on some list too.
Hope my SPROUTS were "clean" SPROUTS!
Bummer.
A little more cheese and onions for me, please!
Tasty!
I used to burn out blender motors making hummus from scratch before it was commercially available.
There’s another mideast dish called Olivieyh which is a salad they should also commercialize. A tiny-cubed potato salad with eggs, peas, lemon, just delicious and very nutritious.
America needs to go back to eating food they prepare themselves. It used to be that a family went in with another and shared a side of beef, or whatever meat. Now, everything is “processed”in some way. Who would want to eat hummus from the grocery shelf? I make my own and it is 100 times BETTER than ANY brand or flavor I’ve tried on the grocery shelf. That stuff is trash! UGH!
I just bought a huge pork loin roast and cut it into several small roasts and then some steaks. VERY lean ones, as well. I know some are Jewish, so pork steaks are not their thing, but we do not all need to succumb to disaster talk. Take a look at something else for a change. Besides, with the cost of beef these days, we’ll all need to be looking at another source of protein. I am not into soy, personally, and don’t believe that the majority of people need to be eating large quantities of a product that acts as ESTROGEN. I have never felt that raising babies on soy milk was healthy, especially male infants? Why start them on estrogen from their birth? This is unnatural.
And don’t forget you can’t drink the water in Portland.
Today I bought a really nice rump roast that I will slow roast rare on the grill either tomorrow or Memorial Day It has been seasoned with a good rub and a few other spices. I paid $3.59/lb for it.
I also buy these and make my own ground beef. Very lean, and since I ground it, I can have my hamburgers as rare as I would like them! And this $3.59/lb rump roast makes leaner ground beef than the ground beef sold in the stores at upwards to $5.00 or more per pound these days. I use the grinding attachment for our Kitchen Aide stand mixer.
“...pickled ramps...”
I gather you want everyone to keep their distance from you this weekend :)
You got a good price on that!
Beef is sky high.
Hummus made with ramps, or pickled ramps might be almost edible :)
And btw, you all gotta know that hummus is Muzzie food! An Arab delicacy...and each of the virgins waiting for the suicidal Muzzie terrorist comes to him bearing her own special hummus to sooth him on his way to Muzzie Hell. :)
Mmmmm... med rare hamburger...
Coming right up! Grill is about ready!
