HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- Senator Jay Rockefeller implied race is part of the reason many oppose President Obama and the Affordable Care Act.
As he chaired a Senate Commerce Committee hearing Wednesday, Rockefeller suggested opposition feels Obama is of the wrong color.
It's not something you're meant to talk about in public, but it's something I'm talking about in public because that is very true," Rockefeller said.
Republican Senator Ron Johnson from Wisconsin said it was offensive Rockefeller would play the race card.
"That you would say that opposition to Obamacare necessarily must stream from some inherent racism? Very offensive, Johnson said at the hearing. Listen, my opposition to health care has nothing to do with the race of President Obama."
We asked some people in Huntington whether they agree with Rockefeller.
"I can't say all over the country, but I know here in West Virginia it's probably the case," Larry Peters said.
A woman who works at a local hospital who wanted to remain anonymous said she believes Obamacare is doing more harm than good, and race is not a factor.
"So many doctors won't accept it because they limit billing on how much they can bill for a procedure and exams, so doctors just don't want to accept it," she said.
"To me, he was a reliable friend, a walking example of the kind of America I believe in, and a living testament to the values that made West Virginia my own forever home. It has been my greatest privilege to serve with Robert C. Byrd in the United States Senate. I looked up to him, I fought next to him, and I am deeply saddened that he is gone."
"a walking example of the kind of America I believe in"?
Hmm,wasn't Senator Byrd a member of the KKK?
It's not something you're meant to talk about in public, but it's something I'm talking about in public because that is very true.
Millionaires and Billionaires are screwing America.
“That’s retarded, sir.” /S
The entire legacy of the Democratic Party is shrouded in racism and race baiting politics. Racism and the Democratic Party are joined at the hip.
“So many doctors won’t accept it because they limit billing on how much they can bill for a procedure and exams, so doctors just don’t want to accept it,” she said.
Yea, that whole making a profit and staying in business thing is just so.......racist.
Indeed. Let’s not forget all those six figure income trial lawyers who find their way into black robes and political offices.
It has been the “r” word, be it a football team or on Obamacare being played up all day long! The Dems are starting to get desperate!
It's like Old Maid. You try to slip the race card into somebody's hand.
On Medicare & Medicare Advantage, we will end up paying just over $14,000 more this year than last. Yet it is racist for me to complain about less coverage for more expense that is directly attributable to Obamacare.
I want to go out with a smile on my face like Jay’s Uncle Rocky, not screaming, crying and gasping for breath like Megan Marshack.
Extortion and propaganda.
But not like his cousin Michael, who got eaten by headhunters in the South Seas.
Of course a racist like Jay is going to think that. People relate to what they can identify with.
For liberals, using the race card is always a good backup when they have no rebuttal.
Jay is a perfect disgrace for a representative of the great state of West “By God” Virginia. Spoiled rich kid, named John D Rockefeller IV. Adopted the cool mountain names of “Jay” and buys a seat where he has mis-represented the Mountaineers for lo these many 30 years! What a total ba$turd.
Regarding his pulling of the racism card, please consider the following. Sen. Rockerfeller evidently needs to read the Constitution that he swore to protect and defend. Not only will he notice that Congress’s constitutional Article I, Section 8-limited powers say nothing about public healthcare, but also that the 10th Amendment clearly indicates that powers not expressly delegated to the feds via the Constitution are reserved uniquely to the states.
In fact, given that Sen. Rockerfeller is so concerned about public healthcare, he should have gotten himself elected to his state legislature where he’d at least have the 10th Amendment-protect state power to establish RockerfellerCare.
Correction: Marxist Millionaires and Billionaires are ruining America.
Rockefeller is one of the most useless politicians in modern American history. Bought himself a state and acted like its king along with KKK leader Robert Byrd.
Marxists/Democrats - the same. Traitors.
Senator Rockerfeller was Governor of West Virginia for two terms....I had a family member (deceased) who worked for him in 1980s/1990s.
David Rockerfeller his Uncle heads up the think tank at CFR, or did a few years ago, and David is a self proclaimed communist in his memoirs.
If you’re so worried about racism why don’t you give all your money away, paint your face black and move to the ghetto. Otherwise, shut your trap.
Gee, no.
My meds have skyrocketed under Obamacare.
I really hate the rich in politics who don’t have to worry about their payments or their insurance and use the convenient cover of racebaiting to cover their complete and utter disdain for everyone suffering under this incompetent feckless POS.
