Big-voiced rocker Caleb Johnson is the season 13 “American Idol,” winning the title over teenage pop singer Jena Irene....

The two-hour finale included performances by John Legend, Kiss, Demi Lovato and Lady Antebellum. It also showcased a song by judges Jennifer Lopez, Keith Urban and Harry Connick Jr., with judge-turned-mentor Randy Jackson joining in.

Even Seacrest took a turn crooning, proving as a singer he’s a great host. He was joined on Richard Marx’s “Right Here Waiting” by the singer-songwriter.

NBC’s singing contest “The Voice,” which leapfrogged “American Idol” in the ratings, has leaned heavily on its performer-coaches to boost audience interest.

I liked that guy too. I don’t think he was the strongest singer of the three finalists, but he has a stage presence and a sense of entertaining that will garner a healthy career.

I tuned out most of the year and only saw the top 3. I thought they were all great choices and could have seen any of them win.

The Voice is a better show in just about every way imaginable. All the coaches are positive, and do their best to bring out the best in the contestants. The top 10 were all really excellent musicians. I think the final results of the top 3 were about right. The fellow who won was incredibly talented on many levels. Usher did a good job ‘coaching’ him, but he had a heck of a lot to work with. Seeing Usher for a couple of seasons has really made me respect him and his abilities. Still don’t particularly care for his musical style, but there is no doubt that he knows what he’s doing.

yeah, he just seemed like a true artist that loved music and it showed.

others picking his songs in the semi-final round doomed him though :( (plus Jena having one of her top 2 performances ever didn’t help)

I got a real kick out of watching Idol this year, too. Started watching because my 81-yr old mother is a fan, so it gave us something to talk about. I ended up really enjoying it! The finalists were all extremely talented, the judges stayed classy and upbeat, the music direction by Rickey Minor was fantastic, and the whole production was outstanding. Ryan Seacrest is a classic television host such as we don’t see any more.

I was a Jena fan because of her wide performance range, but Caleb is a bit more mature, he’s a classic rock artist with a huge talent, and he deserves a shot at the major leagues. They both have a solid career ahead of them, so I hope they stay clean and have a positive experience with it. Some of the past Idols seem to have walked away from fame, which was probably the better decision for them personally. I was in and out of the music business at a young age, and am familiar with some of the realities.
