House Democrats will participate in the new select committee on Benghazi, Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) announced Wednesday, naming five members of her caucus to serve on the panel.
Rep. Elijah Cummings (D-Maryland), the top Democrat on the House Oversight and a veteran of previous Benghazi investigations, will serve as ranking member on the panel, which will be led by Rep. Trey Gowdy (R-S.C.). The other members are Reps. Adam Smith (D-Wash.), who serves as ranking member of the House Armed Services Committee; Adam Schiff (D-Calif.), who serves on the spending panel overseeing the State Department budget; Linda Sanchez (D-Calif.), who sits on the Ways and Means subcommittee on oversight and veterans; and Tammy Duckworth (D-Ill.), who also serves on the Oversight Committee.
Pelosi met briefly with Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) to discuss the Benghazi panel on Tuesday afternoon. Staff members were continuing talks on how the panel would work Wednesday morning.
The two parties have been at odds over the rules governing the select committee, with Democrats calling for equal authority when it comes to subpoena power, accessing documents and deposing witnesses.
The panel is charged with getting to the bottom of the attacks in September 2012 on the U.S. consulate in Benghazi, Libya that left U.S. Ambassador Chris Stevens and three other Americans dead.
Many Democrats, notably Assistant Leader James Clyburn (D-S.C.), have called for a boycott of the panel for fear that their participation will legitimize a process they've deemed a political witch hunt designed to embarrass President Obama and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.
A separate group of Democrats has urged party leaders to get on board, if only so they can access the documents and witnesses that emerge during the probe and defend the administration from what would otherwise be a one-sided investigation.
Boehner earlier this month named seven Republicans to the select committee.
Yep. He’s handled plenty of buttholes in court.
I’m disappointed Alan Grayson didn’t make the cut.
Would love to see TG cut him off at the knees.
Elijah is a showboat who likes to pontificate about nothing-he will need to be reminded of the rules early on...
Speaking of rules. Gowdy should just say were using standard judicial rules. His panel would understand. The Ds would be clueless
It would have been a hoot if Pelosi would have appointed Grayson, she’s a dim bulb but she’s not that stupid. :)
Three from the Left coast, one from Leftist Maryland and one from Leftist Illinois. Nazi Pelosi sure did stack the deck with those picks. Her motives are so transparent.
Yes they are...She was between a rock and hard place and believe she had to make those picks to try and save a tiny bit of face with her leftist friends.
LOL! Those graphics are great.
Cummings needs to watch his BP...he could stroke out.
Either that, or they’d ignore what he said. I didn’t check to see how many of the Ds are attorneys, but I know that there are several on Gowdy’s team.
That Cummings dude gots to be the ugliest!
Cummings is a big plus since he already has set up a document pipeline with the IRS.
All but one on Gowdys. Two federal prosecutors.
How much judicial experience among them?
Seriously? Pelosi is even more out of touch than I thought-she’s been exposed to too much San Fran pixie dust...
Cummings should have been indicted for the damn TruthRevolt emails he sent! How is he allowed on.
Also... Tammy Suckworth who wheeled out of the room during the victim’s families testimony? Piglosi does it again. At least that a&&hate with the white hair and little mustache isn’t on it.
