Salinas police fatally shot a man armed with gardening shears midday Tuesday outside a Sanborn Road bakery, Cmdr. Vince Maiorana said.
The officer-involved fatality is the second this month and the third for the year including the deaths of Osman Hernandez and Angel Ruiz, respectively. Last year, Salinas police killed one: Jose Ruiz, on Williams Road.
Officers responded about noon Tuesday to a home on the 700 block of Elkington Avenue when a woman reported a man had jumped her backyard fence and attempted to attack her dog with scissors, Maiorana said.
When officers encountered the man at the intersection of Sanborn and Del Monte Avenues, outside Delicia's Bakery, he made no attempt to hide the shears, Maiorana said.

How’s his dog?
Any word on the immigration status of the deceased?
Agree I didn’t see him lunge forward. Seems they just wanted to push him until they could perforate him and they didn’t choose a safe location - intersection.
We were naive.
So tell how many armed crazy people have you disarmed in that manner.
I can’t believe some of your comments!
This cop MURDERED this guy. Are you all BLIND? The cop moved HIMSELF into a dangerous position and then, SURPRISE, I’m in a dangerous position. Then fires THREE times, just to be sure.
If all else has failed, (don’t know we were there yet) shoot the guy in the leg. Down he goes, threat neutralized.
Pepper spray? A guy with garden shears that can’t breathe and can’t see is not a threat.
As far as the witness with the kid goes, Some people just aren’t terrified by situations that place them in possible danger. I don’t see what she did as a big risk. The likelihood that she or the child would get shot were minimal. I think people need to accept some risk so that the police can be watched as in this case it proved worth the risk.
The perp had garden shears not an explosive device.
More times than is posted in the news. It is one of the safest ways to deal with this kind of trouble.
They don’t have tazers in Salinas? Isn’t this the kind of thing they were made for?
All I can tell from the few frames that are visible is that the cop didn’t move, and the guy did turn around and was closer to the cop then he was before... Other than that, can’t tell anything more.
A tazer was fired, you can hear the pop of it going off early in the encounter. But it was only tried once.
