KATHMANDU, May 20 (Thomson Reuters Foundation) - M ountaineering tourism in Nepal faces a threat from global warming as melting glaciers feed the risk of more deadly disasters such as the avalanche on Mount Everest that killed 16 people last month, scientists said on Tuesday.
More than 2,000 foreign mountaineers flock to the Himalayan nation sandwiched between India and China each year, mainly to climb the world's highest mountain, generating revenue of $3.4 million in permit fees for the impoverished country.
Rising global temperatures have shrunk the total area of Nepal's glaciers by almost a quarter between 1977 and 2010, with an average of 38 sq. km (14.67 sq. miles) vanishing every year, the International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD), based in the Nepali capital, says in a report.

Well, it could be a decimal point error.
It’s as goofy as the video they like to show of glaciers “calving” icebergs as if it were caused by global warming. It is as goofy as claiming that heavy rain is caused by river flooding.
I don’t know how “rising global temperatures” could be causing a glacial melt, when in fact, global temperatures haven’t risen in 15 years.
And frankly, if a bunch of tourists get killed in avalanches on Everest, I don’t care. They knew the risk when they started the hike..
You're obviously not drinking fast enough
I was watching a show about this particular avalanche. People die in that particular area all the time. Building sized chunks of ice are constantly shifting, breaking and falling over. It is what it is.
BTW glaciers once covered a good portion of all the continents. Then they melted and are continuing to do so.
I know, right? Because the Khumba icefall has aways been so safe until now.
I wonder why they call it an icefall? LOL
So-if someone just has to do something totally dumb and dangerous, wouldn’t it make more sense to go climb a mountain where there aren’t as many avalanches? There are plenty of mountains all over the world where a climber can risk their life falling several thousand feet, rather than lose it in an avalanche.
I don’t really give a rip about the revenue Nepal gets/doesn’t get from tourists, and I doubt the earth will move into a better position relative to the sun to keep their glaciers frozen...
So far, 2014 has been the coldest year in recorded US history. The previous records of 1899 and 1912 fell just a short while ago.
Also, the current ice packs at both the North and the South poles are larger than any time since satellite records have been kept.
Here is a solution — install miles and miles of chicken wire and mesh to catch any of those chunks of ice. That way it will make it safe.
Seriously, it is a tragedy when a race car is injured or dies. But we all realize that the risk comes with the job. Climbing Everest is no different.
Everyone the mountain knew that such a tragedy was a matter of WHEN, not IF. Ice blocks the size of buildings are constantly shifting and moving and some time there was going to be a bunch of people in the wrong place when a huge block fell. It finally happened and it will happened again and it doesn't need a mythical cause like global warning. If we need a mythical cause, let's stay with local myths and say that a yeti deliberately started the avalanche.
Global warming. I mean, global cooling, uh, no... climate change.
It is called exploiting a tragedy for political gain. The Democrats are good at it.
It seems as if the AGW offensive has renewed itself lately.
