Because the Khumba icefall has always been so safe until now.

Everyone the mountain knew that such a tragedy was a matter of WHEN, not IF. Ice blocks the size of buildings are constantly shifting and moving and some time there was going to be a bunch of people in the wrong place when a huge block fell. It finally happened and it will happened again and it doesn't need a mythical cause like global warning. If we need a mythical cause, let's stay with local myths and say that a yeti deliberately started the avalanche.
