I wonder if they had very strong evidence, so D’Souza decided to plead guilty, hoping for a lighter sentence?

Probably. When the Feds are after you, it's usually the best you can do. Their conviction rate is incredibly high.

This is like the Martha Stewart case. He would be unable to convince a jury that he is not guilty even if he is not guilty.
