Michael Sams declaration in February that he wanted just to be known as a football player, and not a gay football player, started to unravel with the news that he was working with the Oprah Winfrey Network on a reality show on his "historic" journey. Who was causing the distraction now? Not the haters.
Sources told ESPN.com that the network's plan was to follow Sam's personal life as he tried to make the Rams, dividing the content into six to eight segments. The Rams and the NFL said they were unaware of the project prior to its announcement.
After careful consideration and discussion with the St. Louis Rams, the untitled Michael Sam project has been postponed, allowing Michael the best opportunity to achieve his dream of making the team, said Erik Logan, president of OWN. OWN is about elevating and empowering people to achieve their best. Its clear that we, along with the world, recognize the important opportunity that Michael now has in this moment. We will continue to support him in his journey to earn a spot playing for the Rams.
After todays meeting with the Rams, we collectively feel it is best to postpone the project, added Sams agent Cameron Weiss. This will allow for Michael to have a total focus on football and will ensure no distractions to his teammates. EVERYBODY INVOLVED REMAINS COMMITTED TO THIS PROJECT and understands its historical importance as well as its positive message.
Oprah wanna make Sammie an “openly gay” rock star!
OWN is about elevating and empowering people? I thought it was for profit.
what ‘historical importance’ ??? Sam is not the first gay man to play sports fcol
Actually Michael Sam is a very clever guy. He may or may not make money as a player in the NFL. However in today’s cultural environment there is a fortune to be made as a gay icon.
And a 7th round draft pick at that. What’s so historical? If his NFL career fizzles out, as expected, he has an “escape route” by hooking up with a gig on Oprah’s network. So much transparent BS. And to think I when I was kid I was made fun of for beleiving pro wrestling was real? SHEESH!
I hope everybody is Happy now.
Translation:
If you guys at OWN try to turn our training camp into a media circus we'll cut his sorry ass right now and be done with it.
Yeah, much like Danica Patrick who just wanted to be known as a race car driver. Well, before her pinup calendar shots anyway.
And yes - Ellen Degeneres used to be funny when she was a professional comedian who happened to be a lesbian. I enjoyed much of her stuff. She quickly became a lot less funny when she turned into a professional lesbian who happened to be a comedian. When being a gay activist is your be-all and end-all, everything else takes second place to that.
Was it going to be a musical?
That’s the ticket!
Just imagine Sam in the role here played so well by John Larroquette -

Hmmm. Guess this makes Oprah a racist homophobe.
How long were you waiting for a chance to post that?
Bingo.
You broke the code.
I’m sorry but I can’t look at Sam’s face without thinking...... ugh.
I’m sure his teammates will feel that way too.
Honest! It just popped out of the memory hole.
(I have a lot of odd stuff packed away in there. I'm old enough to have been in musucal theater way back when it was a great way for straight guys to meet cool chicks.)
If Sam is okay with being permanently typecast as ‘That Black Gay Football Rookie” he will do well financially. This little episode here with Sam keeping a reality show secret from his Team Managers should be a teaching moment for them.
Look at how selfcentered and downright sneaky this fellow can be, and he has’nt even got started or met his team mates yet, plus; look at what happened to a player who dared to express himself in a nonsupportive manner; he was fined out of pocket and sent to a socialist styled ‘re-education camp, something we used to joke about as being uniquely Red Chinese. Hell, I wouldn’t say one single word to him until he calls off his Gay Mafia. These things and more will not endear him to the team. Maybe his skill will override all of that, one never knows.
That looks like a Jolly Grey Giant dancing onstage with an twinkle toed Elf. Well, it is supposed to be comedy.
Have you ever seen “How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying?”
It’s one of the best written and funniest musicals ever.
Many years ago I performed that number on stage. (Hint - I wasn’t the Elf.) I still laugh every time I see it.
