They were not personal checks, they were bank checks, equivalent to cashier’s checks. I do not know where they were cashed. The recipient family did not have a bank account. Now, with the help of the one friendly Hindu teller, they have a bank account and receive bank wires from my wife.

I find that strange -- I know of people who were wiring money to Bombay from the Gulf right from 1973 onwards and no issues
Now if this was outside Bombay I'd say maybe, but Bombay, very difficult

2. The stealing of bank checks if they are to encasher with no checking, then that happens in India to all -- no caste or creed barrier to being robbed
it's sad that it happened to your wife's family, but that was thievery and not targeting as they were Christians
