Written by newcomer Englishmen Elton John & Bernie Taupin who had yet to make a foothold in America in 1969, this Chuck Negron showcase was a precursor to the next four decades of chart domination by Sir Elton.

To: AZamericonnie; All
This song was penned by the songwriting team of Garry Bonner and Alan Gordon, former members of a band known as The Magicians. Together Bonner & Gordon had written material for pop stars like Harpers Bizarre, The Lovin' Spoonful, Gary Lewis & the Playboys, Petula Clark, Blues Magoos, Alice Cooper, Frank Zappa and Barbra Streisand. Their most famous songs were a string of hits for The Turtles in 1967 including "She'd Rather Be With Me", "She's My Girl", "You Know What I Mean" and the classic pop icon "Happy Together". Lead vocals for this 3DN blockbuster were shared by Hutton, Negron and Wells and again included the Chicago horn section before the band's official debut. The song raced up the charts in 1969 placing #6 on Canadian Singles list and #15 on the Billboard Hot 100 in the U.S. In the span of a year and two albums, Three Dog Night had scored six top 40 singles and were on the cutting edge of American pop music.

Captured Live at the Forum was the third album by Three Dog Night, released in 1969. The album was recorded at The Forum in Los Angeles, in front of an audience over 18,000. According Chuck Negron's autobiography Three Dog Nightmare, 3DN opened this show in support of Steppenwolf, who were recording various shows on their 1969-70 tour for an upcoming live album (Steppenwolf Live, released in 1970). Steppenwolf and Three Dog Night were both under contract to the ABC/Dunhill label and shared the same production team, so it was decided to record Three Dog Night on this occasion as well, despite the band's having only released two albums to date. The choice was fruitful, as Captured Live at the Forum quickly reached #6 on the Billboard album chart and added airplay and longevity to the band's previous whirlwind of hits. It also let audiences know that the band was excellent and exciting in concert and propelled them to instant headliner status at large venues in North America as well as bookings on the many TV shows of the era that featured variety and musical acts.

Sidenote:All the songs featured on Captured Live at the Forum were previously issued in studio versions by Three Dog Night. Because they were touring extensively in support of the band's latest album Suitable for Framing and the their eponymous first album, there was no new material, yet the live album of already released songs had the effect of a greatest hits album for the band which in just over a year had come from nowhere to become American pop icons.
