I actually remember bringing it up to my work mates in a hall in a cubicle farm back in 1991. I said there was a word that was being sold as so awful, even though it was not a swear word, that just speaking the word out of context would freak people out. I said it was offensive to me that with our first amendment this could even be done to a word. They didn’t know what I was talking about and wanted to know what word would have such an impact.
I said, very quietly, “N****r.”
You should have seen their response. They all started looking around to see if anybody was listening. I said, “See what I mean? Don’t you have a problem with that?”
