New school food requirements are going into effect next year, attempting to make school meals healthier.
The changes will affect four major areas. First, The Smart Snacks program requires that all sides must be served with something healthy.
Second, the school will be required to meet the first target of reducing sodium.
Third, all whole foods served must be whole-grain. This year, the requirements are half-and-half. Finally, breakfast must include fruit.
This year, students are allowed to choose to refuse two items at lunch if they do not want it, and one at breakfast. New requirements say that they have to take at least one fruit at breakfast and one fruit or vegetable at lunch.
Each meal must include five components: grains, proteins, veggies, fruit and dairy.
"The reason for this is help kids make better choices," Said Rita Beebe, Cassville food service director. "We are here to educate them, and maybe it is something they will take with them through their lives."
By forcing students to take things they do not like, Beebe believes that the school will be feeding the trashcans, and she is doing everything she can to prevent it.
"When we make them take food, we start to waste because children don't want to be told to take what they don't like," Beebe said. "So, we have to be creative."

When did such laws get passed through Congress? I must have missed that part.
They should call them Commie Snacks.
I remember hearing that a school wanted to set up cameras by the trash cans, to document how much food was being thrown away.
Yep, we are supposed to be liberal, and help these kids make better choices. Yep, I can see how this will work out......................
Experience has shown over and over the kids will just throw away anything they don't like.
This is unbelievable. Kids are going to get fatter and fatter due to their stupidity. Look what happens when kids FINALLY get their hands on alcohol. We forbid it from them and then suddenly at 21 or younger when they get it they go bonkers. Well guess what, you don’t allow them sweets, soda, sugary drinks, desserts, etc and they will go hog wild when they finally are able to get their hands on them. These schools are making a huge mistake. We are going to kill our kids if we do this. Everything in moderation for goodness sake. That is life 101.
People, you do not have to send your children to this school. Consider private education.
When did the states delegate to Congress, via the Constitution, the specific power to decide policy for school lunches? I must have missed that amendment.
The happiest, most well-adjusted and fittest kids I know in my neighborhood are home schooled.
Frankly, the level of paternalism involved, here, clearly shows a school system that has lost its compass. Sad, but all too common in what is supposed to be "public education."
William Flax
and if they don't eat it will they be forcefed?
Those ‘laws’ were passed right after Michelle Obama got elected.
New requirements say that they have to take at least one fruit at breakfast and one fruit or vegetable at lunch, even if they are going to throw the food away without tasting it.
That can certainly be a success. However, my larger point was any private education. Parents don’t have to let someone else choose where the children will go to school. They don’t have to let someone else decide what their children will eat.
There are other options. There’s even state virtual schooling, for those who don’t mind the state’s education program in general, but don’t want to play the redistricting-every-year game or want to choose their own meals.
Why don’t we just skip school meals altogether, and give children the gov’t approved nutrients intravenously?
My kids said politics doesn’t matter, it doesn’t affect them. I stopped by the cafeteria and pointed out the sign on the Coke machine saying it was off limits to kids in care (during school and after school), as well as the menu that had a lot more beans and veggies than last year. I asked if they remembered those sorts of things from last year. Neither kid did.
These changes were made because of laws the Democrats are passing. So yes, it affects you - even down to the Coke machine.
It needs to be renamed “fill up the school trash cans with stuff no kids want to eat.”
Or crafted to require kids to eat everything put on their plate in front of them.
This is probably why the shelf-stable fruit puree pouches are now ubiquitous. One unit the size of a juice pouch is a serving of fruit. It doesn’t go bad like fresh fruit, what the kids don’t open can be set aside for later and there is no prep work.
Republicans need to start running on letting states develop the school lunch menu, and get the feds out of it.
Lunches kids will eat, pop and candy bar sales to fund band and sports, pizza and burgers.
Plenty of HS seniors are old enough to vote, and would nothing better than telling Moochelle to pound her ‘healthfood’ lunch up her fat a$$!
