NEW YORK (AP) - Health officials have confirmed a second U.S. case of a mysterious virus that has sickened hundreds in the Middle East.
The latest case is not an American - he is a resident of Saudi Arabia, visiting Florida, who is now in an Orlando hospital. Officials: 2nd US case of MERS reported

"Overall, 538 people have been reported to have the respiratory illness, including 145 people who have died. So far, all had ties to the Middle East region or to people who traveled there. As many as one-fifth of cases have been in health-care workers, Schuchat said"
20% of healthcare workers get infected.
Both US cases involve health care workers from Saudi Arabia. The case in Indiana suggests the health care worker worked in a facility where MERS patients were being treated.
"That man, an American, was a health-care worker at a hospital in Saudi Arabia's capital city who flew to the United States on April 24 on a plane that originated in Riyadh, stopped in London and then landed in Chicago. The man took a bus to Munster, Indiana where he became sick and went to a hospital on April 28."
The Florida case also involves a Saudi-national health care worker exposed to MERS in SA.
The linked article stated:
"Fortunately, it is not as contagious as flu, measles or other diseases. There is no vaccine or cure and there's no specific treatment except to relieve symptoms."

The above linked article posts a closing statement which begs the question(s),
INSANITY! Gross negligence/incompetence or worse, is SA intentionally allowing MERS to spread globally via public transportation (local, national, continental, & transcontinental)?
UPDATE via AP 4 hours ago: Saudi Arabia reports 5 more deaths from MERS

Time for the US government to start protecting US Citizens instead of foreigners.
Years ago, during the hoof and mouth scare, my husband’s business was ruined thanks to a blanket ban on importing used tractors from other countries, even if those countries did not have a single case of the disease. Now we allow visitors from countries where there is a deadly disease! Oh, well, it would have been different if they had been Muslim tractors, wouldn’t it?
"...doctors worry that there are many cases not yet identified. "
Notice how the Indiana patient came into contact with travellers on a plane that
originated in Riyadh, stopped in London and then landed in Chicago. The man took a bus to Munster, Indiana. . .and Lord only knows how many innocents he came in contact with between there and the hospital! Meanwhile the AP suggests :
Fortunately, it is not as contagious as flu, measles or other diseases. There is no vaccine or cure and there's no specific treatment except to relieve symptoms."
while the ActionJaxNews linked FAQ's counter with:
"One big problem with MERS is how fast it transfers from human to human and how it has quickly moved from hospital to hospital"
BOTH U.S. MERS patients were in Saudi Arabia as health care workers in facilities treating MERS patients.
*****Health Care Workers represent 20% of all MERS related deaths********
Perhaps those doctors worrying that many cases have yet to be identified, have good reason to be so worried.
P.S. via Science Daily 5/8/2014: Ending the perfect storm: Protein key to beating flu pandemics,
A protein called SOCS4 has been shown to act as a handbrake on the immune system's runaway reaction to flu infection, providing a possible means of minimizing the impact of flu pandemics. Scientists have found that without SOCS4 the immune response to influenza infection is slowed and there is a vast increase in the number of damaging inflammatory molecules in the lungs.
All incoming from that muzzy pit should be checked first. There two should have definitely been screened due to their work with the sick ones. Morons are running the checks for incoming terror and contamination.
Yet another illness imported from the 7th century barbarians.
Screened? While the CDC is mindful that 20% of MERS deaths are health care workers, why aren't all MERS facilities employees quarantined? Permitting global travel to health care employees exposed in MERS treatment facilities is insanely negligent, gross incompetence!
He ended up in Orlando. Did he get into any of the tourist areas before getting hospitalized? Scary.
This man also was a health-care worker at a hospital where MERS cases were being treated, the CDC said.

He traveled on May 1 on flights from Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, first to London, then to Boston, then to Atlanta, and finally to Orlando. He went to a hospital on May 8 and was placed in isolation. . . As early as the first flight, the latest case was suffering fever, chills and a slight cough.

Health officials did not immediately release additional detail about his travels or his week in Florida, except to say he was not at any theme parks and remained in the Orlando area to see family.

Health officials now must track down fellow travelers who were around the newest case, and this time it will be more challenging: There were more flights involved.

Man who died on flight suffered heart attack
KUALA LUMPUR: The 64-year-old Indonesian man who died during an AirAsia X flight from Jeddah to Kuala Lumpur had suffered a heart attack, the Health Ministry said.
The ministrys director-general, Datuk Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said the man had not died because of the Middle East Respiratory Syndrome-Coronavirus (MERS-CoV).
Based on information gathered, the man experienced fever, cough, difficulty in breathing and loss of appetite in Mecca for a few days.
The man had sought treatment at a clinic there, Dr Noor Hisham said in a statement here yesterday.
He said during the flight from Jeddah, the man experienced difficulty in breathing and died.
His body was sent to the Serdang Hospital for a post-mortem.
Since the man was returning from performing the umrah (in Mecca), samples were taken to screen for MERS-CoV and they returned negative, added Dr Noor Hisham

Does this autopsy have any integrity?
-shouldn't that warning be a bit more informative and proactive ...perhaps suggesting to quarantine every health care worker exposed at a facility treating MERS patients before permitting global travel
- especially given, "...As many as one-fifth of cases have been in health-care workers said Dr. Anne Schuchat" of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention
Easy solution: Before travelling, you must submit to an ear or forehead thermometer check. Fever of 101+? Constant/loud cough? Copious nasal drainage? You ain’t flyin’!
