Police officers busted into a southwest Atlanta hotel room late Monday, ending an hours-long standoff involving two suspects in the recent deadly crimes in DeKalb County.
Nine shootings have killed four people in recent days, and DeKalb police had worked 60 hours straight to arrest suspects, Chief Cedric Alexander said early Tuesday. But the investigation and search for possible suspects continues, he said.
Three adults including two homicide suspects and one of their girlfriends and a 5-year-old boy spent hours in the room Monday during a standoff with officers from three agencies.
Cutrez Johnson, 16, and Oslushla Smith, 19, were arrested late Monday at a hotel on Forrest Hills Drive, off Cleveland Avenue, Alexander said. The two already have been charged with murder for the shooting deaths on May 3 and May 10, and are possibly linked to a weekend home invasion that left a 9-month-old dead and injured three adults, Alexander said.
We are pretty certain that the arrests that have been made will help us with the continuation of the investigation, Alexander said. Theres still an ongoing investigation going on in the death of that child.
A woman, whose name was not released, was taken in for questioning, Alexander said. She is the mother of the boy who had been in the room, but it was not immediately known if the two were being held against their will, police said. The child was released to his grandmother and was not injured.
U.S. Marshals were attempting to arrest the suspects at the hotel when they barricaded themselves inside a room Monday afternoon, Gavin Duffy, USMS spokesman, told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
An Atlanta police SWAT team was called to the scene to assist with negotiations, Duffy said. DeKalb County officers were also at the scene.
Those negotiations lasted throughout the night Monday, as people claiming to be family members pleaded publicly for those inside the room to surrender. But the standoff continued.
There was an increase in activity at the hotel around 10:45 p.m. when about a dozen DeKalb County vehicles arrived as a loud alarm sounded.
Around 11:30 p.m., officers entered the room, injuring one person inside, according to police.
As a result of us gaining entry to the room, the windows were blown out, Deputy Chief Shawn Jones said.
One man was brought out of the room on a stretcher and was transported to the hospital for treatment, Alexander said. The extent of his injuries was not known, but he was in stable condition at the scene, police said.
A 9-month-old baby was killed and three adults critically injured Saturday night in a home invasion that police believe was in retaliation for a previous deadly shooting, according to DeKalb police.
Police have not released the names of those believed responsible for the home invasion, but have said the crime is linked to others.
The local government was quick to intervene when it was learned that the two were not sheriff's deputies or FBI, but rather common criminals.
The two 0bama's sons were arrested in connection with the murder of a 9 month old baby as well as two earlier murders. Too bad someone didn't shoot them when they were 9 months old.
You can stand down (but makes sure that any "novelties" that say "front..." on them haven't been turned around to face your house.
“Cutrez and Oslushla”......
With names like that no wonder they commit murders.
I guess it was either that or run for Kongress from GA's 4th Kongressional district.
Anyone who would murder a child deserves nothing less than death by dismemberment.
Dammit.
I kinda liked the 'do not touch' look.
Oh no. Cutterz and Oslushie were going back to school.
Please Amish...stop giving your kids ‘African sounding’ names. If you are proud of Africa, move there. Most HR managers will not hire crazy sounding names.
Cutrez...Oslushla. ‘nuff said.
GA FReeper ping.
Glad these guys are off the streets.
Just another day in DeKalb county. :-)
I will bet $5 that neither of them can even spell their own names.
I had a Holder’s Peep in the Army, he spelled his first name “marquis”. I asked him how he pronounced it and he said “Marcus”. I figured his Mama got the idea off of a Mercury glove box door.
This is a SWAT team doing what a SWAT team is meant to do!
All that work expense and effort, and my guess is that they'll be back out on the street in 12 years. One at 16 cannot get the death penalty due to federal law, and the other was just "a good boy who made a mistake."

SWAT didn’t shoot any pets or kick down the wrong doors. I’ll cheer for the SWAT team this time.
In any case, the travesties of sentencing to come, are not the fault of the SWAT team who seem to have done an excellent job.
I suppose you've seen "La-A" from Louisiana?
