Chamber of Commerce gives ultimatum to GOP (immigration)
politico.com ^ | 5/12/14 | Kevin Robillard

Tom Donohue, president of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, said the GOP shouldn’t even field a presidential candidate in 2016 unless Congress passes immigration reform this year.

“If the Republicans don’t do it, they shouldn’t bother to run a candidate in 2016,” Donohue joked at an event on infrastructure investment in D.C. “Think about that. Think about who the voters are. I just did that to get everybody’s attention.”

Republicans have focused on immigration reform as a way to woo Hispanic voters, who have increasingly drifted to Democrats over the past two election cycles. Growing Hispanic populations in Nevada, Texas and elsewhere could make those states more amenable to Democrats in the future.

Donohue, whose group has spent months pushing House Republicans to support immigration reform, was speaking about what he thought a dysfunctional Congress could still get done in 2014.

“You think Congress can get immigration reform done this year, in an election year?” moderator Eamon Javers asked Donohue.

“Yes, yes,” Donohue replied.

National Association of Manufacturers President Jay Timmons said he also thought immigration reform could pass this year, perhaps in a lame-duck session.

“This is a unified position of the business community,” Timmons said.

Reform backers have focused on the weeks before the August recess as a time when the House could move on immigration reform after a bipartisan bill passed the Senate last year.

Past time for “We the People” to totally boycott the grifting Chamber of Commerce. They should have no political power and should become history. It is obvious that the funding they receive is used to corrupt the constitutional processes or fill the individual pockets of their organization and a$$ki$$ing politicians.

I do not know one Mexican, who has been here for generations, that is for amnesty, and I know a lot of them.

Under Lesher, the Chamber had endorsed the Clinton health care plan of 1993, angering many conservatives. Congressman John Boehner led a campaign pushing companies to leave the Chamber over its support of the bill. When Donohue took over, the Chamber’s power was considered to be at a low ebb.

Donohue is president of the National Chamber Foundation as well as the Center for International Private Enterprise, a core institution of the National Endowment for Democracy.

The Washington Post wrote “Nobody has mastered this new Washington game better than Thomas J. Donohue.” “Tom is a bodacious, hard-charging, in-your-face kind of guy, which is not the style you see in Washington much anymore,” W. Henson Moore of the American Forest and Paper Association told the Post. He calls Donohue the George Patton of the trade association world. “Tom Donohue threatens, cajoles, badgers — whatever it takes to get what he wants,” consumer activist Joan Claybrook said.

Conservatives need to start pushing the idea that big business is pushing amnesty, and only big corporations are behind it.

Liberals hate big business, and if we can hammer that message enough, the liberals will turn against amnesty too.

” Big business wants amnesty so they can lower your wages, why do you support big business?”

“Big Business wants amnesty to destroy the middle class.”

What the hell does he think is going to happen? They are going to grant amnesty and they will all be grateful and vote republican?

Oh, are being too kind by half.

These traitors all know that this is true and don't care. They are in it for the money and power they can accrue, not for any principled reason.

Crony Capitalism at it's worst.

Donahue can move to Mexico if the ethnic composition of the United States is so offensive to him.

Maybe he can form a latter day San Patricio Battalion.

And then we can send a latter day Gen. Harney to see to him...

The trouble with the business amnesty crowd is they think legalizing folks will enable them to hire more legitimately. Perhaps. But for the many who use migrants and illegals, their business model is based on underpaying market wages. Once the illegals have been amnestied, their base salaries will be the prevailing US wage. If these businesses cannot pay that wage now, they will still require more slave laborers. Illegal immigration will not stop.

Yeah, that’s what this Donohoe guy really needs to be concerned about. Getting to 2016, being faced with an Elizabeth Warren Presidency and THEN coming to the realization (well documented in prior cycle exit polls) that Hispanic voters don’t vote immigration issues, they vote their support for government handout programs like Obamacare. AND that there’s no longer a damn thing he or anyone else can do about it.

The Chamber of Commerce and its supporters (Silicon Valley) need to keep wages low and to do that they need more folks from outside the USA to take those CHEAP jobs so they can make more money.

“This is a unified position of the business community,” Timmons said.

I suppose under our new fascism, it's OK for a portion of the business community to make special laws for some people.

I think the goal is to have amnesty act as an attractant for more illegal aliens, who they can pay under the table and treat as de facto slaves. That’s the way the 1986 amnesty worked.
