My father-in-law also was adopted as an infant in 1928. He too was born to a single mother with no information about his father. He never had any desire to find his birth mother, but since his death my wife and her sister was been researching her. Recently they had a breakthrough and were able to find her obituary. There were no siblings and while my wife would love to have a photo she does not want to contact any nieces or nephews as they may be unaware of her father's birth.

Write and simply say you’re doing genealogy research and may be related to her. No need to mention the birth and its not a lie.
