Los Angeles Clippers owner Donald Sterling says he's sorry but feels he was "baited" to make racists comments, nearly two weeks after the NBA fined him and banned him for life for his remarks in a recorded conversation.
"When I listen to that tape, I don't even know how I can say words like that. ... I don't know why the girl had me say those things," he told CNN's Anderson Cooper in an exclusive interview set to air on Monday.
"You're saying you were set up?" Cooper asked. "Well yes, I was baited," Sterling said. "I mean, that's not the way I talk. I don't talk about people for one thing, ever. I talk about ideas and other things. I don't talk about people."
Sterling, an 80-year-old married lawyer and billionaire real-estate investor, hasn't spoken publicly about the accusations since celebrity gossip website TMZ posted a 10-minute audio recording of him that drew widespread condemnation from fans, players and the league.
In that audio clip, Sterling chastised friend V. Stiviano for posting pictures online of her posing with African-Americans, including basketball Hall of Famer Earvin "Magic" Johnson.
The recording triggered a firestorm that led to Sterling's lifetime ban from the NBA and a $2.5 million fine. NBA Commissioner Adam Silver has asked the other 29 owners to force Sterling, the longest-tenured owner in the league, to sell the Clippers.
"I'm not a racist," Sterling told Cooper. "I made a terrible, terrible mistake. And I'm here with you today to apologize and to ask for forgiveness for all the people that I've hurt."

I’m thinking there’s a “forgiveness” groundwork being set up here. The NBA realizes it may be in a very, very bad legal position by sanctioning Sterling for comments made in an illegally-recorded personal conversation; Sterling wants to keep his team and his reputation. So everybody gets together for a “forgive-fest” that won’t cost either side bazillions.
Simple as that.
re: Magic Johnson put his ho’ up to it so he could steal the team in the name of “reparations.”
If he has to pay market value for the Clippers, that wouldn’t be “stealing”.

Yep. What we see now is being orchestrated by the lawyers on both sides. I just think the guy has a habit of shooting off his mouth, and this time he got caught.
RE: A forced sale will not result in “market value.”
It is ILLEGAL to force someone to sell his property at a loss.
The LAW is on Sterling’s side. Neither the NBA nor Magic Johnson can buy the team for LESS than what it is currently worth.
Sure, they can pressure Sterling to sell, but they CANNOT force him to sell it at less that what it’s worth.
And who decides what it's "market value" is, Einstein?
The only one who can decide that is Sterling, and if he doesn't want to sell there is no "market price."
In defense of the "Market Value" issue:
It will be "Market Value" or off to court for Sterling and the NBA. He would be a fool not to go to court.
Equally probable is the sale at a premium to avoid a long and possibly losing court battle by the NBA. Certain bad publicity. Highly possible bad result. Is that worth the risk? I doubt it. The other owners will loan in the necessary money to get this over quickly. To me that means a premium for Sterling.
His mistake was hooking up with a tranny gold digger.
And what if he still doesn't want to sell?
