For his last New Rule of the night on Friday, Bill Maher used a recent column about Cliven Bundy and Donald Sterling by The Washington Posts Kathleen Parker to stand up for privacy and the Fourth Amendment. If the Sterling case taught us anything, Maher said, its that theres a force out there just as powerful as Big Brother: Big Girlfriend.
If you dont want your words broadcast in the public square, dont say them, Parker wrote in her column published last week, adding, Such potential exposure forces us to more carefully select our words and edit our thoughts. This isnt only a matter of survival but is essential to civilization. Speaking ones mind isnt really all its cracked up to be, as any well-balanced person reading the comments section quickly concludes.
Always editing? Id rather be a Mormon, Maher responded. And thats what wed all be: Mitt Romney. I would listen to 100 horrific Cliven Bundy rants if that was the price of living in a world where I could also hear interesting and funny people talk without a filter.
As for the idea that people wont miss speaking their minds, Maher said, Ill miss it. Ill miss it a lot. And for the record, speaking my mind is absolutely everything its cracked up to be.
Who wants to live in a world where the only right to privacy is inside your head? Maher asked. Thats what like in East Germany was like.
If I want to sit in my living room and say I think The Little Mermaid is hot and I want to bang her, or I dont like watching two men kiss, or I think tattoos look terrible on black people, I should be able to, even if you think it makes me an asshole, Maher concluded. Now, do I really believe those things? Im not telling you because youre not in my living room!

Color me surprised.
Throw us a bone Bill.
I’m not, he knows the lunatics he is aligned with and how they tolerate him for now, but as soon as the “common enemy” is vanquished he would be next.
Now the challenge is: does this forum trash him for being so wrong on so many other issues, or does it applaud him for being right on this issue and welcome him to the fight?
I say, applaud him for being right (on this issue) and welcome him to the fight.
Oh yes, he makes dense on this.
RE: Color me shocked that Maher actually gets this issue exactly right (for a change.)
His eyes are opened as he realizes that what happened to Donald Sterling could also happen to him.
He realizes that he might be next and he has to watch his mouth.
Finally, a Bill Maher position I can agree with.
Despite all the perks of Liberal elitism, I think he is beginning to realize that his position is as fragile as the next syllable. If he doesn't stand up for the right of others to say what they think of believe, who is he going to be able to make snarky comments about? If everyone shuts up and sings the party line, there's no one left for a Liberal to try to make fun of.--He'd be out of a job.
That’s rich. A flaming liberal statist speaking out in favor of privacy. Does he realize the contradictions involved?
” he makes dense on this.”
That may be a typo, but I like it!
That(dense) was an accident.
Is it a sign of end times if I agree with this Ahole?
Bill, you were an a*****e long before Sterling came along.
No, but my guess is that you agree based on principle.
I’m guessing Maher takes this opinion based on self preservation. The guy is a complete a-hole. I’d guess that there are more than a few people who have been party to decidedly un-PC things he’s said that he doesnt want coming out, let alone being held to account for. Stuff that can’t be explained away as part of his media persona.
Bill Maher to Jiminy Glick, ‘I never went to formal acting school’
Jiminy, ‘NO!?!
Bill should run as a conservative Democrat. He’d be the only one in the USA.
Wonder if he fears tapes of him are out there?.
Even if he is right on this issue, he is still an a...hole.
