President Barack Obama congratulated Michael Sam on Saturday for being the first openly gay football player taken in the National Football League draft, the White House said in a statement.
"From the playing field to the corporate boardroom, LGBT Americans prove everyday that you should be judged by what you do and not who you are," Obama said. He also congratulated the NFL and the St. Louis Rams, the team that drafted Sam.
Sam, an All-American defensive end who played for the University of Missouri, made history when he was picked by the Rams in the seventh and final round. He was the 249th of 256 players selected.
The 24-year-old got the news by telephone from Rams' coach Jeff Fisher, who told Sam: "You are a Ram. The wait is finally over."
Sam, who was filmed by ESPN as he got the call, broke down in tears in the arms of his boyfriend. "Thank you," he could be heard saying to Fisher....

Rams have two of the best defensive ends in the NFL.
He uses gays as pawns in his game of politics.
The first time I saw the crying scene, I thought it was one of those going-into-commercial-break parodies like they do for the Mike & Mike show. But no, it was sickeningly real.
Should be an interesting game when Ramin Sam plays the Packers,,,
:)Obama is a lot strange .

Post of the day!
Also, doesn’t the liberal ideology want us to ignore what gay people do or at least part of what they do?
I’m sure Mike and Mike will be slobbering all over themselves tomorrow in congratulations - as will anyone else who wants to keep employed at ESPN.
Wonder what Sage Steele will do? Chris Broussard? Other people of faith there.
You can’t parody this stuff.
He would not have been drafted at all if not for being homo. The Rams were “encouraged” to take him.
Exactly, darn near the very bottom of the draft where nobody makes the team. He comes out of University of Missouri so of course, pressure is applied to the Rams to take their already accepted home town boy and draft him in order for the league to avoid any backlash.
Meanwhile, the Rams are stuck with a player they can never get rid of.
I don't see him sticking around. I think he was drafted so the NFL can say they drafted him but he just doesn't have the size and speed to make it in the NFL. He stood out at Mizzou because he was on a line with far better players and they made him look better than he is.
"From the playing field to the corporate boardroom, LGBT Americans prove everyday that you should be judged by what you do and not who you are,"So if Mr. Sam engages in an act of buggery, we can judge him for it?
In this case by "who you do".
I was wondering, after I saw that cake/icing laced kiss yesterday - if at that moment, America had "crossed the Rubicon" - I mean, we've been sliding down that hill for a while, but we may have just gone over the cliff
