EARTH CITY, Mo. -- Michael Sam made history Saturday afternoon, as the St. Louis Rams made him the 249th overall choice in the 2014 NFL draft.
The Missouri defensive end becomes the first openly gay player to be drafted in league history and seeks to be the first openly gay player ever to play in the NFL. Video of Sam receiving the call from the Rams and coach Jeff Fisher revealed the player's emotion while surrounded by friends, family and his boyfriend.
"In a world of diversity we live in, I am honored to be a part of this," Fisher told ESPN.
"I don't want it to become an unusual distraction for his teammates but him as well," Fisher added.

I remember that game, and the picture around the internet afterward. Lions fans have to have a thick skin. Lol.
Mean machine!
Damn. Sam I Am a Ram. Just Damn..
Drudge has up that some magazine is saying “History will look back at moment sports changed forever”. Really? They are trying to make this out to be like Jackie Robinson.

Note to myself: Oh, the author of the Time Mag editorial writes for Outsports, okay, no big deal I say.
The sodomite Michael Sam is absolutely disgusting in every way. Worse yet, he’s a native Texan and like Wendy Davis, Willie Nelson, Lyndon Johnson, Matthew McConaughey, Tommy Lee Jones and others so very fortunate to have been born here, Sam and those others have brazenly rejected the values that make Texas great: Christianity and Conservatism.
For the record, I’m not going to look it up again but there was an openly gay LA Dodger back in the ‘70s. So, no, Sam isn’t even the first openly high profile gay athlete or first gay professional player actually taking in account the big 3 or 4 team sports, NFL, MLB, NBA and NHL.
I thought Eli Manning was the first openly gay player in the NFL....just ghey-looking.
His 40-yard dash time was one of the slowest in the recent NFL Combine.
Being an openly gay football player is one thing, but can he perform at the level demanded of the NFL? Time will tell whether he stick around in the NFL or ends up being out of the NFL completely.
I don’t even know what position the fool plays
Sports didn’t change
He played Defensive End at Mizzou.
A fellow employee of mine was always called Sam. One day after he came to work in my group I saw his records of his full name. His name was not even close to any of his name. I asked him why everyone called him Sam.
His reply was this:
When he arrive at his post in Nam, the First Sarge called him and the other newbies Sam. When asked, the Sarge told him he called everyone SAM, because they were all “Sorry A%% Mother”!
It was something that stuck.
"I am Michael Sam, Homo Defensive End, Mizzou........
They showed the video on my local sports - no announcement that some people might be offended.
And, they kissed not once, not twice, but three times ...
The news just HAD to show it ...
My question is whether his "significant other" will get to sit in the wives/girlfriends section at games ...
Too easy...
If he weren't gay NOBODY would care.
And frankly I don't care either.
The media making a huge stink about it is ridiculous.
Watch the guy not even make the team.
Or at best, ride the bench for a couple of years.
Although as a Seahawks fan, I secretly hope the Rams play him all the time.
They could make mincemeat out of a barely competent, undersized, slow defenseman.
It would be great if the Rams play a few games in Uganda, Nigeria, Yemen or the Sudan.
They're St Louis' problem now
Rams? Or gets rammed? I never watch NFL or NBA let the devil take the hindmost
