Armed and extremely dangerous. Some heavy weapons have fallen into the wrong hands in Chicago and police desperately want to get them back.
Perhaps ironically, these semi-automatic rifles are very similar to what police themselves use. Thirteen of them were stolen from a train parked in Englewood complete with their high-capacity 30-round magazines.
Special Agent Tom Ahern, ATF:Theyre high-capacity rifles. Theyre very dangerous when theyre in the wrong hands.
The Smith and Wesson M and P 15 Sport Rifle virtually identical to the M-4 assault rifle U.S. troops use at war, police use to keep the peace; or citizens use to create chaos, in the AR-15 Bushmaster Incarnation. Thats the now-infamous weapon used in the massacre at sandy hook elementary school.
Sometime between Sunday and Tuesday, 13 of them were grabbed from a shipment of 50, from a Norfolk Southern freight container parked at this Englewood rail yard.
Community Activist Andrew Holmes: Im demanding that a thorough investigation be done and the security firm thats here be removed until this case is resolved just in case this was an inside job.
Investigators seem to feel otherwise, that the crooks had no idea what they were taking. Its not a security firm that works here, but Norfolk Southerns own police force, now working with Chicago police and the bureau of alcohol, tobacco and firearms to get the guns back
They fire whats known as a NATO bullet essentially military caliber 5.56 millimeter and while they dont ship with those bullets; they do ship with magazines that carry 30 of them at a time, firing them off as fast as you can pull the trigger.
Tom Ahern And were just hoping that these guns dont get in the hands of more violent offenders that are gonna use them in crimes.
They were just passing through on a train from Smith and Wessons factory in Springfield, Massachusetts to a licensed dealer in Minnesota.
What has law enforcement and politicians here so concerned is that these are exactly the kind of weapons and magazines theyre trying to keep off the streets of Chicago.

Go to Second City Cop blog and read the comments on this. Looks like many in the CPD think it’s an inside job....gun walking.
The Smith and Wesson M and P 15 Sport Rifle virtually identical to the M-4 assault rifle U.S. troops cannot use on terrorists (because of the rules of engagement), police use to shoot dogs or citizens who annoy them; or citizens use protect themselves against civilian and Federal criminals, in the AR-15 Bushmaster Incarnation.
Corrected for grammar and punctuation.
So THAT's why the Federale's were in the shipping yard my commuter train passes through every day ......
Here's the thing: that shipping yard is HUGE. At any time there are literally THOUSANDS of boxcars parked there temporarily on their way to another destination.
Finding the one boxcar with those weapons in them is truly like looking for a needle in a haystack. Conclusion: Inside Job. Someone knew what was in that boxcar and precisely where it was in the shipping yard to steal them.
No way in hell it was anything else.
It's both. Trust me on this.
and it looks like a war zone with burned out, boarded up homes next to vacant lots where other burned out, boarded up homes used to be.
The commuter train I take goes through it every day. I've often pondered filming that part of my commute and putting it up on YouTube for other Freepers to see. It really does look like a war zone and I cannot imagine how people (and children) manage to actually live there...
Imho, the way the administration gets away with so much is to have story after story trump the previous one, and then wait for or precipitate something like Aurora or CT to wipe the news cycle 'clean', or try to kick a family off a ranch or call someone a 'racist' to push their stuff out the back door of the average American TV viewers minds (if it ever made the tube).
By the time the latest overblown kerfuffle settles down, people (short attention spans) have generally forgotten about the last series of scandals and misdeeds.
Simple, but damnably effective PSYOPS tactic.
