Police Shooting Frenzy Raises Concerns

MIAMI (CBSMiami) – On December 10, more than two dozen police officers from across Miami Dade County converged on a blue Volvo that had crashed in the backyard of a townhouse on 65th Street just off 27th Avenue.

As the car was wedged helplessly between a light pole and a tree, nearly a minute passed before officers opened up – firing approximately 50 bullets at the car and the two unarmed men inside the vehicle.

The two men inside the car survived that initial volley of gunfire, according to witnesses, who said they could see the men moving inside the Volvo. Everything went quiet for nearly two minutes before the officers opened up a second time – unleashing an unrelenting torrent of bullets that lasted almost 25 seconds. By the time it was over, the two men inside the car were dead.

CBS4 News has learned a total of 23 officers fired a total of at least 377 rounds.

Bullets were sprayed everywhere. They hit the Volvo, other cars in the lot, fence posts and neighboring businesses. They blasted holes in a townhouse where a 12-year-old dove to the ground for cover and a four month old slept in his crib.

The sound of the gunfire was deafening – literally deafening. Two Miami police officers sustained ruptured ear drums from the cacophony of shots.

377 rounds \ 23 officers = 16 rounds per officer.

Each one of these cops had to reload at least once?

They did suffer fairly heavy casualties, especially since they were shooting at two guys, just sitting in a car.

There was a time when cops would actually be concerned with where the rounds were actually going...Now its just open up with dozens of rounds, fired by dozens of cops...When no one was even shooting at them...

It’s a chaotic hysterical anything goes...no joke.

I should think it would raise concerns. Only 167 rounds were fired at Bonnie and Clyde, and only Bonnie and Clyde were hit.

These people are the wrong types for the work they do, and the responsibility that we give them, they are a danger to us.

But at least they enjoy their jobs, as illustrated in the last paragraph, a neighbor’s observation:

“The policemen that had on the black and white vests were out there laughing like it was so funny,” said one of the neighbors, “because they got a free shot off them people. Shooting all them bullets like that, that don’t make no sense.”

Contrast this to the capture of Lee Harvey Oswald after killing officer Tippit:
“As police arrived, the house lights were brought up and Brewer pointed out Oswald sitting near the rear of the theater. Police Officer Nick McDonald testified that he was the first to reach Oswald and that Oswald seemed ready to surrender saying, “Well, it is all over now.” However, Officer McDonald said that Oswald pulled out a pistol tucked into the front of his pants, then pointed the pistol at him, and pulled the trigger. McDonald stated that the pistol did not fire because the pistol’s hammer came down on the webbing between the thumb and index finger of his hand as he grabbed for the pistol. McDonald also said that Oswald struck him, but that he struck back and Oswald was disarmed. As he was led from the theater, Oswald shouted he was a victim of police brutality”

We came full circle on this years ago. It used to be that I marveled at cops and their restraint when apprehending an individual suspected of killing one of their own. Now, it’s just a matter of how many bullets they can pop into a suspect before he turns to jello.

Cops and their unions will always claim the “fear of their lives” nonsense to justify a murder.

The investigation that follows is a joke and nothing is ever done, which is exactly why these savage thugs continue their murderous behavior. They will never be held accountable in this life.

Supervisors let the situation get out of control early. By the time they tried to get control of the officers it was too late.

It reminds of young George Washington and Grant who had soldiers get out of control in their first battles.

Not to the murders, but if I were one of the 23, I'd fear for my life too. 22 either poorly trained or at the moment unbalanced people discharging their weapons, were I #23 you'd find me behind the nearest cover.

My dad was a copper who retired in 65...his comment was close to that: I have six that says you are wrong so use your head when confronting the police.

A full mag each. Their training tells them to dump all their rounds into their target, so that later they can claim that they were in such fear for their live nothing less would do, and there was no reasonable opportunity to do any less.

It also pretty much ensures a very dead target that can't contradict their story.

I never read the article.

I even stopped reading the headline.

Now I just post random platitudes on various threads.

It reminds you of an army?

It reminds me of a 3rd world country where the cops are lawless and murder at will.

Read the article...There were two long bursts of rounds, about two minutes apart. Plenty of time to load up.

Yeah, just “drop down to Mexico” and you can see this behavior first-hand on a daily basis.

I really believe thats the intent when they fire that many rounds. They literally want the target turned into mush.
